Reading Round Up: February 11th-20th

Hello Friends and Happy Monday!! I hope everyone had a great weekend. We stayed in mostly and spent some time with family. I had a really good reading this past 10 days. I had three 5 stars!! I think it’s a toss up between Shipped and Float Plan for my favorite so far! Let me know if you have read any of these and what your thoughts were.

Shipped by Angie Hockman – 5 Stars Give me enemies to lovers, a tropical vacation and beautifully described sights and animals and I am here for it!! Henley is up for a promotion at her marketing job for a cruise line and it turns out Graeme her work nemesis is also up for the same promotion. Their boss tells them that they will both be going on a cruise to The Galapagos Islands and they both need to come up with a marketing plan to up tourism and this will be the deciding factor for the promotion. While I loved the romance in this book I think my favorite parts were when Henley and Graeme are on excursions from the ship. It sounded so pretty and magical that I know have added going birding there to my bucket list.

Well Met by Jen Deluca – 3 Stars This is the second book in this series and we are following Stacey who met in the first book. This book did not live up to my hopes after loving the first book so much. I had a hard time believing the romance between the two main characters, especially because in the first half of the book the guy that Stacey thinks she is talking too and the guy actually doing the talking are two different people. While I didn’t like the catfishing in this book it wasn’t my main problem. I feel like once she realized who she was talking too she just accepts it really quickly and then starts up a real relationship with him. It just felt a little too rushed in my opinion. I did really enjoy the glimpses we got of the main characters in the first book and I am so excited to read the next in the series!

Act Your Age, Eve Brown by Talia Hibbert – 5 Stars When I read the first book in the Brown Sister’s trilogy I didn’t think I could love any of them more than I did the first sister, Chloe. But Eve came into my world and said hold my beer! Eve was such a great character and I loved her journey of self discovery so much. When the book starts out Eve is dealing with another job failure and her parents telling her she needs to grow up and get her act together. Leaving in fit of pique Eve drives to a small B&B in a village and tries to get a job as a chef. On first meeting Eve, Jacob is taken aback by Eve’s personality. Jacob who is on the Autism spectrum likes his world in a tidy orderly way and Eve does not fit that. After a minor accident puts Jacob out of commission, Eve is hired to cook and help clean the B&B. By the end of the book both characters have come such a long way and their journey was so much fun to read! I highly recommend this book if you are wanting a sweet and steamy romance. Thank you Avon and Harper Voyager for my gifted copy for review.

Party Of Two by Jasmine Guillory – 4 Stars This is the fifth book in the Wedding Date Series and we are following the sister of the main character from book 1. Olivia moves from New York to LA to start up a new law firm with her best friend. Within her first few days in the city Olivia meets Max at a hotel bar and while the two hit it off they don’t exchange their information. She finds out later that night that he is a junior senator and glad that it didn’t go anywhere is she is not wanting a relationship like that. A few weeks later they meet again and the two decide to start actually dating. I really enjoyed the relationship between these two characters and thought Max was so adorable. Both characters have some self discovery to do and I really liked that aspect as well. I have read a few others in this series and so far this one is my favorite and I am excited to finally get to the rest of the series.

Float Plan by Trish Doller – 5 Stars I have a more detailed review coming but I just want to say that I loved this book so much!! Thank you St. Martin’s Press for my gifted copy to review.

Book Blitz: The Sweetest Valentine by Lacey Baker

Lacey Baker

Ruthlessly organized Sydni Murray’s life goal checklist was derailed after her broken engagement last Valentine’s Day. Now, with the holiday fast approaching again and the town’s biggest chocolate festival on the horizon, she must put her biases about love on the backburner. But happy ever after may not be in the cards for the couple as Sydni’s in danger of losing her shop and Kelan’s plan to stay in Sweetland is threatened by an unbelievable career opportunity.

Goodreads / Amazon

EXCERPT:

There was a movie star standing in her shop, posing for pictures with two of her dearest friends and all Syd could think about was how many more milk and dark chocolate truffles she needed to make to complete Savannah Cantrell’s order. She’d intended to spend the morning in the kitchen working on the order but Sharay, her part-time clerk, was down with the flu. That left her the only one here to run the store today. Not that she minded, Sinfully Sweet was her dream come true. Owning and running her own specialty chocolate shop after the detour she’d taken on her career path was an accomplishment Syd was thankful for every day.

“Unfortunately, we’ve been in here way too long. We’ve got to get going before Aunt Louisa becomes hysterical with worry.” Julia’s hand on her shoulder had Syd turning at the sound of her voice.

“Huh? Oh, yes, you’re right. You were supposed to be over at the community center putting up decorations today.” Luckily for Syd, Marabelle Stanley was an early bird and any events that she oversaw she liked to get a head start on. With Syd having to work today she wasn’t available to help Marabelle.

It was Saturday, the week before the Wine & Chocolate Festival and tomorrow after church was the pre-festival kick-off with Marabelle’s Valentine’s Day luncheon. Louisa Kirk, Julia’s aunt, was Marabelle’s shadow and the sugar to Marabelle’s often bitter attitude.

Julia rolled her eyes. “Yes, we’ll have to hustle to get there without being too late, but I couldn’t resist getting that cupcake. I’m ordering a dozen from Gina since you only have a limited supply here.”

“Great news! Kelan’s going to be in town for a few weeks and he’s agreed to stop by the luncheon tomorrow.” Nessa’s exuberance as she bounced over to them was infectious and Syd found herself smiling.

“That’s very nice of him,” she replied and looked behind Nessa to where Kelan Hunter was staring down at his phone. No doubt checking his availability for the off-the-cuff commitment he’d just made. Surely a man like him would be too busy for a small-town luncheon.

“Let’s go tell Aunt Louisa,” Julia said nodding toward the door. “You gonna be alright here alone with him?”

Syd shrugged. “He’s an actor not a serial killer, right?”

Julia waved a hand as she headed toward the door. “You know what I mean. And regardless of his good looks and official career, he’s a stranger in Sweetland so you call me if you need me.”

“Get outta here,” she told them while moving toward the door. “I’ll call you later.”

“Don’t forget. I want to hear about everything you two talk about after I’m gone,” Nessa told her before walking out.

“Girl, bye,” she replied laughing as she stepped back pulling the door closed. The bell overhead jingled again and she turned back to see that Kelan had moved from where he’d been standing across the store.

Now, just a couple feet away from her, he stood with one hand in his jacket pocket. A casual stance that made her feel more relaxed than she probably should be with a guy she’d just met.

“Look, I don’t mean to take up your time. I just have a few questions.”

“Right.” She nodded. “About the post office and a letter that wasn’t written to you.” It all sounded extremely vague and admittedly more than a little confusing. The bigger issue was that she just didn’t have time for any of this today.

“It was here a long time ago but in the late seventies there was a big fire and the majority of this block was destroyed. The post office was relocated two blocks over to Liberty Street and when the reconstruction here was finished, the Town Council decided to keep the post office there because the space was bigger.”

“I see,” he said with a shake of his head. Then he looked around the store again. “How long have you been here? What was this place before you moved in?”

“You ask questions like a reporter.” And with that observation she figured the best way to get rid of him was to answer the questions and send him on his way. “I’ve been here for five years. Took a mortgage out on the building after I returned from Germany.”

His brows were raised when he returned his attention to her and she couldn’t tell if it was because of her reporter comment or her mention of Germany. Oftentimes people mistakenly assumed that small town folk never left their small town to see any of the world. Syd had made a point not to be that person and if everything went according to her updated five-year plan, she’d continue to shatter that myth.

Author Bio:

Lacey Baker, a Maryland native, lives with her husband, three children, two grandchildren and English Bulldog in what most would call Suburban America–a townhouse development where everybody knows each other and each other’s kids. Family cook-outs, reunion vacations, and growing up in church have all inspired Lacey to work towards her dreams and to write about the endurance of family and the quest to find everlasting love. To date she has written in several genres including small town romance, YA paranormal (as Artist Arthur), a cozy mystery series titled Rumors and adult paranormal (as A.C. Arthur).

Let’s Talk Bookish: February 19th

Hello Friends and Happy Friday! The Let’s Talk Bookish Meme is a weekly meme that is created and hosted by Rukky@EternityBooks and Dani@Literary Lion and todays topic is: Are Big TBRs a Result of Abibliophobia? (Suggested by Jillian @ Jillian the Bookish Butterfly). Abibliophobia is the fear of running out of reading material, and TBRs are lists of books you plan to read.

I personally have a huge TBR, I have an entire 6 shelf bookcase plus others lying around that are full of books I want to read. However, my huge TBR is not a result of Abibliphobia. Mine is a shopping compulsion in which I like to go to used book stores and buy books that I MIGHT read someday.

I keep my most wanted TBR books on a book cart next to me so I try to grab those first when I am reaching for my next book. I also have TBR’s on my kindle as that is where most of my arc’s go. At times I do think that my TBR has gotten out of hand but then I think, no it’s fine and continue on my used book hunts!

Do you have a big or small TBR?

Book Blitz: The Life and Times of Angie Bardot by Angela Bardot

The Life and Times of Angie Bardot
Angela Bardot
Publication date: February 14th 2021
Genres: Comedy, Women’s Fiction

IS THERE LIFE AFTER?

Setting out on her adventures, Angie is best described as endearingly tragic as she gives a truly laugh-out-loud account of what could possibly go wrong when her long-term marriage comes to an end. Extolling the many pitfalls of being single is no laughing matter and being thrown into the dating arena is even worse.

When curiosity to view a certain piece of the male anatomy takes priority, bedlam unfolds. Angie’s journey will leave you in fits of laughter while raising your eyebrows in absolute disdain.

Taking you from “Hell No” to “Hell Yes,” this two-part true story taps into a range of emotions as you travel along with Angie on her voyage of self-discovery. A captivating exposé of courage and raw honesty in finding a new beginning when life takes a nosedive, this compelling portrayal of compassion gives insight into the weakest and strongest moments of what it is to be human.

You will fall in love with Angie and won’t be able to stop turning the pages to see what she will do next. To err on the side of caution is not Angies strong suit. Heart wrenching, yet hilariously funny in the unique style of telling her tale, it’s never a surprise when she ends up on several occasions with her tail between her legs!

Does she ever learn?

This book is one of a kind, and better still, so is Angie Bardot.

“What an inspiring, self-reflecting, self-effacing, honest, eye-opening sex goddess she is – I loved it!” MARY – WHO WANTED TO KNOW MORE

“Uplifting and HILARIOUS, I’ve never, ever laughed so hard. I literally couldn’t stop reading.” VANESSA – WHO ISN’T A READER

Goodreads / Amazon

Author Bio:

There is more to Angela Bardot than meets the eye. Abducted at the age of five and as a teenager running away from her abusive childhood, Angela traveled overseas to an idyllic peace-loving commune which later becomes an army base and war zone. With no hope of escape, Angela’s endurance from the events of this early part of her life have given her strength. After leaving the commune Angela traveled behind the Iron Curtain where very few westerners dared to go before a year spent in Canada living with her friends loving family which gave Angela an insight into what a family should be. She felt loved for the first time and was ready to return home.
Angela settled down to a somewhat normal life and obtained a Diploma of Copywriting and Advertising and a Certificate in Business, becoming a successful business partner. Angela is proudest of her role as a wife, mother, and grandmother. The importance of her family remains her greatest achievement. Angela traveled to many more countries over the years, but the one she holds dearest was her time spent in Canada, as part of a loving family environment.
Angela Bardot published her first book, Hell No in 2017 which is now incorporated as part one in her new book, The Life and Times of Angie Bardot.

Reading Round Up: February 1st – 10th

Hello and happy Wednesday friends. I hope everyone is staying safe and warm wherever you may be. It’s been pretty cold here in Colorado and we were down in the negative temps for multiple days but it was over a long weekend for the kids so we just stayed in and played games and watched movies. My reading is still going a bit slowly, it is taking me longer to finish a book than normal but thats ok. My favorite out of the 4 books I read this round up was Check Please! I really enjoyed Bitty.

Whiteout by Adriana Anders – 4 Stars Angel is a chef who is working at a research station in Antartica, on the day she is scheduled to leave Angel witnesses a murder. The people responsible for the murder decide to leave Angel there since she won’t survive and take the rest of the station employees to another location. Ford Cooper who is a surly geologist was out on the ice when this happened so when he comes back, it’s to find Angel injured and the rest of the crew gone. The two must work together to get to anther station if they want to survive. I really enjoyed this story and liked learning about how one travels and lives in Antartica. I will say the middle got a tiny bit repetitive but over all I liked the story between the two characters and what they had to go through to make it out alive.

This cover is gorgeous!!

The Paris Library by Janet Skeslien Charles – 4 Stars This was a beautifully written story about love, friendship and family that takes place in two different timelines. The first follows a French woman named Odile who works at the American Library in Paris and we are following her life during the early parts of WWII. The second story line is from a 13 year old named Lily who lives next door to Odile in Montana in the 1980’s. I loved both sides of this story and was eager to keep reading to find out how Odile went from Paris in the 1940’s to living in the US in the 1980’s. I really enjoyed the parts that took place in the Library and the cast of characters that work and visit the library. If you love great stories about family and friendship as well as WWII then I highly recommend checking this one out! Thank you Netgalley, Librofm and Atria Books for my gifted copy!

Friends Like Us by Sarah Mackenzie – 3 Stars We are following childhood friends Bree and Jill. Bree just recently had a scare that made her rethink how her life is going while Jill is still struggling with loss. I loved their relationship and how they were always there for each other. All of the friendships in this book were great and I am excited to read more from this cute town! There was also a few romances in this book which I always enjoy in books! I feel like there was room to give some more interactions between Jill and Bree as well as them with their perspective love interests. Overall this was a fun read. Thank you @readforeverpub and @thatsostelle for my #gifted copy!

Check Please! Book 1 by Ngozi Ukazu – 5 Stars I loved this graphic novel so much and I can’t wait to read book 2! This follows Bitty as he begins college and playing for the hockey team there. Bitty is a former figure skating championship who likes to bake in his spare time, he is also an online personality and has a vlog. I loved following Bitty through his first two years of college and his friendships that he has with his teammates was so much fun. If you are looking for a great feel good story then I highly recommend picking this one up.

Let’s Talk Bookish: February 12th

Hello Friends and Happy Friday! The Let’s Talk Bookish Meme is a weekly meme that is created and hosted by Rukky@EternityBooks and Dani@Literary Lion and todays topic is brought to us by Dani and it is What Makes A Book Beautiful?

They say not to judge a book by it’s cover but we all it do it. So today we are talking about what makes a cover beautiful. I don’t think there is a uniform formula and it’s more a matter of if the book speaks to me. I know I seem to like books that show a young woman in a pretty dress, like Chanel Cleeton’s books and Silvia Moreno-Garcia’s Mexican Gothic.

These two YA Fantasy covers are also some of my favorites, the close up of their faces and the details are just so good.

I also love fantasy covers that looks like paintings. Juliet Marillier is one of my favorite fantasy authors and I think her covers are some of the most gorgeous ones out there!

What are some of your favorite covers?
