S4S – June 6th

Six for Sunday is a weekly meme created by A Little But A Lot and today’s topic is: Summer-y colors. There were so many ways I could have gone with this prompt, colors, real pictures of summer covers, floral. It was hard to choose but I went with covers that scream summer.

  • Meet Me In Pardaise by Libby Hubscher – Contemporary Romance
  • Anchored Hearts by Priscilla Oliveras – Contemporary Romance
  • The Siren by Katherine St. John – Thriller
  • Reckless Girls by Rachel Hawkins – Thriller – releases 2022
  • Malibu Rising by Taylor Jenkins Reid – Historical Fiction
  • The Unhoneymooners by Christina Lauren – Contemporary Romance

What books do yo think have summer-y covers?

Let’s Talk Bookish – July 2nd

Friday’s are for The Let’s Talk Bookish Meme which is a weekly meme created and hosted by Rukky@EternityBooks and Dani@Literary Lion and todays topic is: PROLOGUES AND EPILOGUES: ARE THEY NECESSARY? (SUGGESTED BY FIVES @ DOWN THE RABBIT HOLE)

What’s the difference between having something as a prologue vs. a chapter 1? I feel like a prologue can be used to give you information that is crucial to the plot but might not involve the main characters. Or if the book is about an event in the past then its a way to show that without starting the story there and then moving forward.

Is it too much to have both a prologue and epilogue? Nope!

Do you think epilogues have more value because they might tie up loose ends? For me thats what I like. I like knowing how things end, I am not a fan of endings that leave you wanting more.

Do prologues have more value because they can set the scene? I don’t think so.

Do you prefer having neither? I prefer epilogues but can really take or leave them.

Do you like prologues and epilogues?

Summerween TBR

Hello Friends and happy first day of Summerween!! This is a read-a-thon that is hosted by Gabbyreads and Oliviareadalatte over on youtube. The idea is to read as many horror and thriller books in the summer. This runs from July 2nd – 8th. Below you will find the prompts and some book ideas I have for each one. I have also decided I will probably carry this theme throughout the entire month of July and mood read my thrillers and other books I have been wanting to get too.

Challenges

1) bake or make a drink with your spooky read – I am really into this cocktail right now called a transfusion and it is sooo good plus the name is kind of creepy!

2) read a book in the dark – will probably read one of the books from my kindle since I tend to read that at night and in bed.

3) read a paranormal book – Certain Dark Things by Silvia Moreno-Garcia, The Broken Girls by Simone St. James, Mile High With A Vampire by Lynsay Sands

4) read a horror book – Ring Shout by P. Djeli Clark, Into The Drowning Deep by Mira Grant, My Best Friends Exorcism by Grady Hendrix

5) read a book with black or orange on the cover (or both) An Ambush of Widows by Jeff Abbott, Hairpin Bridge by Taylor Adams, Survive The Night by Riley Sager

These are some other Thrillers that I would like to try and get to this month.

  • Hostage by Claire Mackintosh
  • A Dark and Secret Place by Jen Williams
  • Goblin by Josh Malerman
  • The Therapist by B.A. Paris

Summerween Book Tag

Happy Thursday! I am doing the Summerween tag today in preparation for the Read-A-Thon starting tomorrow! This tag was created by Colleen over on youtube https://youtu.be/kRDjuBj5NHc @LittleGhostCreations and you can find the SUMMERWEEN announcement video here https://youtu.be/7emE-6lSBPo

THE QUESTIONS:

1. What spooky reads are you most excited about in your TBR list/pile right now? A Dark and Secret Place, Survive The Night and when it comes out The Final Girls Support Group

2. What’s your favorite revenge novel? I can’t say that I really have read many revenge novels. I am currently listening to They Never Learn and that one is pretty good. Let me know your favorite in the comments!!

3. What’s a horror or thriller/crime book you wish you could experience for the first time? The Sun Down Motel by Simone St. James

4. Sucks to suck! You were just given a handful of your least favorite candy. The one not even your siblings or friends will trade for. What candy is it and what spooky book did you want to love that disappointed you? I really don’t like Mike and Ikes! And I have read 3 books this year that disappointed me, Every Vow You Break, The Sanatorium and Lie To Me.

5. Time to put on your costume! If you could exist in one spooky novel, which one would it be? Who would your best friend be? I wouldn’t want to stay there but I would love to see the house in Mexican Gothic! Not sure who my best friend would be maybe just my husband.

6. What’s your favorite haunted house book and/or television show? I loved The Sun Down Motel and again the house in Mexican Gothic.

7. The food question. You can ONLY pick one from each would you rather. A. Chocolate or Sour Candy? B. Coffee or tea? C. Apple or pumpkin pie? Chocolate all the way!!! Out of those two it would be tea but I am more of a pepsi girl. I think I would go with Apple because of pie and cider!

8. Show us your favorite book with a witch or a woman who gets screwed over by society and the patriarchy. I am struggling with this prompt! I don’t read a ton of books about witches. I would love to know your favorites!

9. Which book on your shelves or audiobook library has the scariest book cover? So I am a pretty big chicken and am not a fan of scary pictures so I don’t have really have any. However, the covers for My Best Friends Exorcism and Goblin are pretty creepy looking to me.

10. It’s Summerween and it’s hot outside! What book(s) do you recommend that give off summer vibes? Think lakes, cabins beaches, etc. Whatever reminds you of summer! They Last Time I Lied, The House At The Bottom Of The Lake and The Colorado Kid.

11. You and your friends are exploring a well known haunted house. You get separated and suddenly you hear screams coming from somewhere upstairs. You run into the next room and find two of your friends. Which 2 fictional characters are they? Who do you want in this situation with you? I would take Gwen Proctor from The Stillhouse Lake series by Rachel Caine because she is such a badass!! She will do anything to protect her loved ones. I would also want Will Trent from the Will Trent series by Karin Slaughter because I just love him.

12. Trick or treat! Stephen King, H. P. Lovecraft, Mary Shelley, and Shirley Jackson are at your front door. Who do you give the best and biggest candy bar to? I think I will say Shirley Jackson.

13. What is your favorite spooky book to movie adaptation where both of them are good? So I don’t watch scary movies at all and can’t say I have seen any.

Reading Round Up: June 11th – 20th

Hello Friends! How was everyone’s week? Mine was good but ready for the weekend. The hubby and I are going up to the mountains for our anniversary and I can’t wait.

Very Sincerely Yours by Kerry Winfrey – 4.5 Stars This was such a cute story about finding one’s self and what kind of person they want to be. Teddy recently gets dumped after 6 years together and suddenly finds herself with nowhere to go. She also doesn’t know who she is without her boyfriend, for the past 6 years she has been solely focused on him and his needs. Teddy turns to her two best friends who let her stay with them and they come up with a plan to help her find out who she really is. Teddy must do something every day that scares her, it can be a big or small thing but it needs to scare her.

Teddy also has a secret that she loves watching a local kids show called Everett’s Place, think Mr. Rogers. One day she decides to email him for some advice and the two start such a cute email exchange! The two do eventually meet and I loved their relationship so much. Both characters were working on things in their personal lives and I enjoyed how they dealt with these challenges. Everett was just such a sweet guy! I also really enjoyed the parts with Teddy and her friends, they were so supportive her! They had the cutest themed movie nights where they pick a movie and all the food matches it! I highly recommend this one if you are looking for a sweet romance with a side self discovery. Thank you Berkley and Netgalley for my gifted copy for review!

The Charm Offensive by Alison Cochrun – 4 Stars This was a fun romance that takes place on a reality dating show. Charlie is this season’s prince and Dev is his handler for the show. Charlie is very shy and standoffish, he is not comfortable being on the show but is only doing it to help his reputation so he can get back into his work. Dev is the opposite, he is very upbeat and a happy person who believes in the fairytales that he helps create one the show. Their relationship was so fun to watch! I don’t watch reality tv so I don’t usually go for stories like this but I really enjoyed. I love a sunshine and grump and this one did not disappoint there. I struggled with the story towards the end, I just wasn’t a fan of one the plot devices but overall still a great read. Highly recommend this one, especially if you are a fan of The Bachelor type shows. Thank you Atria Books and Netgalley for my gifted copy for review! This one comes out 9/7/21.

Hana Khan Carries On by Uzma Julaluddin – 3 Stars I am learning from my reading over the past several months that I am not a fan of romances that take place in a radio studio or podcasts. There is just something about it that takes me out of the story. Hana wants to be in radio and works part time for a local station and also has a podcast she does weekly. When not doing that she helps out at her parents halal restaurant. Aydin is trying to prove to his father that he can run a successful business and decides to open a halal restaurant near Hana’s families. The start off with a big clash but slowly start to help each other out. Over all this book was just ok for me. I was not invested in the characters and at times it felt like they were much younger then they actually were. My favorite parts were with Hana’s cousin who cam for the summer, he was so fun and cute! I also really liked Hana’s family dynamic, they were all great characters and I enjoyed their stories the most. This is my second book by this author and while I enjoyed her first book more I will still continue to pick up her books!

It Happened One Summer by Tessa Bailey – 4 Stars Tessa Bailey really knows how to bring the steam and this one does not disappoint. This story is kind of pitched as a Schitts Creek inspired story as the main character Piper is a media influencer and has never know hardship because of the life she is used too. After a major incident lands her in jail her step father decides enough is enough and sends her to the small fishing town in Washington where she was born. Once there, Piper is so far out of her depth and she isn’t sure how she will survive the months till she can go back to LA. Brendan is a sea captain who has lived in the town his entire life and doesn’t have time for the spoiled but beautiful woman who just waltzed into his life. The two have a rocky start but within chapters there is an attraction between the two. I did feel like this was a very insta lovey story and those are not my favorite. This book takes place over a month and I just like my romances to be a little bit more drawn out. I did really like both main characters and their individual stories as well as their romance. The people of the town were also great and I can’t wait for the next book because Im pretty sure Piper’s sister will get one! Thank you Avon and Netgalley for my gifted copy for review. This book comes out 7/13/21.

When Stars Collide by Susan Elizabeth Phillips – 4.5 Stars This book is #9 in the Chicago Stars series but my first and I can’t wait to go back and read the others in this series! This one follows Olivia who is a world renowned Opera Singer and Thad who is the backup quarterback for the Chicago Stars. The two are paired together for a month long ad campaign for luxury watches. This started out as a classic enemies to friends to lovers and I loved every minute of their story. My favorite parts were the insight into the opera world and I kept googling performances that were mentioned in the book. I also really enjoyed Thad and his dedication to his team. He knows he is second string and even though he wants to be a starter he never doesn’t give his all in training the young quarterback who is the starter. I loved how Thad referred to him as the idiot and I really hope he gets his own book because I loved his character so much!! This was such a fun romance with a dash of mystery and I highly recommend checking this one out! Thank you William Marrow and Netgalley for my gifted copy for review, this book is out 6/29/21.
