Reading Round Up – October 11th – 20th

Happy Monday Friends! I am here again with some more short reviews on what I have been reading. Have you read any of these books? If so let me know your thoughts below in the comments! My favorites were We Are The Brennans and A Dark and Secret Place.

We Are The Brennans by Tracey Lange – 4.5 Stars Family drama about a woman who returns home to help her family after leaving everyone she loves with no explanation. Really enjoyed this one and can’t wait to read more from her in the future!! Thank you Celadon for my #gifted copy.

A Dark and Secret Place by Jen Williams – 4 Stars Really enjoyed this dark thriller about a serial killer and his connections to a grieving woman who just lost her mother. I would check content warnings for this one as it did have some graphic scenes and descriptions. It looks like this author used to write fantasy and I am interested in trying out one of those.

On Location by Sarah Smith – 3.5 Stars Cute romance about a woman who is the producer of a travel show.  It did get a little repetitive with having the same conflict happened at least 3 times but still a fun read. Loved all the descriptions of the Utah Parks.

Final Girls Support Group by Grady Hendrix – 1 Stars Found this one to be too long and very boring, was not invested in any of the characters. I actually ended up skimming the last hundred or so pages to get to the end of the book. I probably should have dnf’d but didn’t. I think this one was just a me problem and that maybe slasher horror is not for me. I am still going to try some of his other books though!

Heartstopper Vol 2 by Alice Oseman – 4 Stars Another cute installment in the love story between Nick and Charlie!

Not Your Average Hot Guy by Gwenda Bond – 3.5 Stars Romance between a woman who is struggling with life and the son of the devil.  A fun read and if it turns into a series I will pick up the next one because I would like to see where the story goes from here.  Thank you St. Martins Press for my #gifted copy.

Rock, Paper, Scissors by Alice Feeney – 4 Stars An isolated thriller that takes place in a remote chapel in Scotland during a snow storm. A husband and wife decide to take one last trip to try and save their marriage but things do not go as planned. This one kept me guessing and the ending left me with questions!!

Reading Round Up – October 1st – 10th

Hello Friends! How is your week going? Mine is a little off, not sure whats going on just finding it hard to concentrate on anything. So again this round up will be a bit a short. Hopefully I can get to better reviews again soon.

Hang The Moon by Alexandria Bellefluer – 4 Stars This one was a fun romance between two friends that have known each other for years. Annie books a trip to surprise her best friend Darcy but it turns out she is on a trip with her girlfriend so she asks her brother Brendon to let Annie into her apartment. Annie is a skeptic when it comes to love and Brendon is a total romantic so the two have some things to work out before they can get together but it was a cute journey for them to end up together. I really liked all the descriptions of the dates they went on in Seattle as I have never been there and I really want to go some day.

Mine To Possess by Nalini Singh – 4 Stars – Re-read I love the Psy-Changeling series and this one does not disappoint. We have Clay who is a sentinel for the Leopard pack and Tallie who is a human who is helps with runaway teens. Tallie seeks out Clay because her charges have started to go missing or end up being killed. This is a second chance romance for Clay and Tallie as they were childhood friends but lost touch over the years. This is the 4th book in the series and I do think it helps if you read them in order because of the over-arcing story that takes place for the entire series.

For The Wolf by Hannah Whittan – 3 Stars This one is a Young Adult fantasy that reminds me of a retelling of both Beauty and the Beast and Little Red Riding Hood. In this world the second daughter is always sacrificed to The Wolf who is an entity that lives in the forest and protects the kingdom from the monsters that reside there. Red is the youngest daughter so on her 19th birthday she is sent to The Wolf but her twin Neve is not ok with this and works to free her sister. When Red gets to the forest with The Wolf she soon discovers that everything they believe is not actually the truth. Overall the story was fun and I haven’t read too much like it but I had a problem with The Wolf acting like an 18 year old kid when he was in fact centuries old. I don’t like this in books it really takes me out of the story, I understand they do that because of the age discrepancy but it just irks me. I am undecided at this point if I will continue on with the series. Thank you Obit books for my gifted copy for review.

Last Girl Ghosted by Lisa Unger – 4 Stars This story follows Wren who suffered a trauma in her youth and tends to keep to herself and her best friend but she soon starts dating a man she meets on an app. After a few months together Wren gets a cryptic text from Adam, the man she has been dating and then no longer hears from him. Soon after this Wren gets a visit from. PI named Bailey and it turns out the man she has been seeing is the only link to a few missing women that Bailey has been searching for. This sends Wren down a path to search for the man she thought she knew and what she discovers is not what she hoped to find. Overall I really enjoyed this book and the twists it takes. I also really liked Wren as a character, she was resilient when others may not have been in her situation. My only real critique of this book is that at times I found it repetitive and I also feel like the author left some opportunities to maybe have a more paranormal element to the story. Thank you Harlequin and Park Row Books for my gifted copy for review.

Reading Round Up: September 21st – 30th

Hello Friends! I am here with my last round up for the month of September. I have been really struggling with writing reviews for all the books I read and am trying to decide if I want to do something slightly different in 2022. I read 5 books and for the most part they were all good! I had one 2 star that I didn’t like but the rest were 4-5 stars. A Song Of Flight was definitely my favorite of the month.

A Song of Flight by Juliet Marillier – 5 Stars I say it all the time but I love this author! This is the third book in what I think is a trilogy, especially with the conclusion of this book but I could see another series being spun off from this one. We are following Liobhan as she deals with her older brother being injured and the prince he guards has disappeared and she is not allowed to help with the mission. Instead they send Dau who ends up working with Liobhan’s other brother, Brocc. I love this series and the bonds that are formed by the soldiers as they go on their missions. I also love Liobhan and Dau so much!

Heir To Sevenwaters by Juliet Marillier – 4 Stars This one was a re-read for me and I enjoyed it just as much as the last time I read it. This is book 4 in the Sevenwaters series and we are following Clodagh as she enters the realm of the Fair Folk to try and save her newborn baby brother Finbar with the help of one of the soldiers that Bran created back in book 2 named Cathal. I love how Juliet Marilier weaves romance with stories with personal growth of all the characters. I can’t say enough good things about these books!

The Dating Plan by Sara Desai – 4 Stars I am sad that this one took me so long to finally get too. It was a January 2021 BOTM pick but it was a really cute romance. We are following a character that was introduced in the first book but they do not need to be read in order. This one involves a second chance romance between college sweethearts and also has them fake dating! Im excited to read the next one by this author which comes out in November.

Portrait of A Scotsman by Evie Dunmore – 2 Stars I really enjoyed the first two books in this series but this one just really fell flat for me. I was not invested in either of the main characters and actually disliked the main female character through most of this book. I didn’t understand the ending at all and after buddy reading this one and hearing their points of view I kind of understand what the author was trying to do but for me it just fell flat.

A Good Day For Chardonnay by Darynda Jones – 4.5 Stars I ran out and bought this one the day it came out but didn’t get to it till now. I was so happy to get back to Sunshine and her friends, family and coworkers! This series follows Sunshine who is the sheriff of a small town in New Mexico. In some ways this feels like a cozy mystery but it is a little graphic at times and also has steamy scenes. I am loving this series and I need book three now because of that last sentence!!!!!!

Books With Fall Vibes That Aren’t Horror

Hello Friends! I wanted to share a post of some fun books that feel like fall but that are not thrillers or horror novels. Let me know if you have any that you would recommend!

Contemporary Romances

  • Very Sincerely Yours by Kerry Winfrey – Takes place around Halloween and the main character likes to dress up at the vintage Toy shop she works at.
  • How Sweet It Is by Dylan Newton – This one follows a bubbly event planner who is doing a book launch for a horror book and it was really fun!
  • The Ex Hex by Erin Sterling – A contemporary with fantasy elements following a witch who gets dumped and drunk and curses her ex. Also has some steamy scenes!
  • Pumpkin Everything by Beth Labonte – A very cozy romance that takes place in a small town that goes all out for pumpkin season.
  • What If You and Me by Roni Loren – Another steamy romance that follows a horror author and a hot neighbor! A little bit of a heavier read but really good.
  • The Simple Wild by K.A. Tucker – This is another harder hitting romance that follows a woman getting to know her dad before he passes away. Takes place in Alaska around Thanksgiving.
  • Truth or Beard by Penny Reid – This one starts out a bit awkward at a Halloween party with a sexy Gandalf costume! This book made me want to go to Tennessee for the Fall.

Graphic Novels

  • Pumpkin Heads by Rainbow Rowell – Follows two friends on a night looking for love at a local corn maze. Very cute and sweet
  • Blood Stain by Linda Sejic – Funny series about a woman desperate for a job and takes the first one she gets. An assistant position for a mad scientist!

Mystery/Thrillers

  • Still House Lake Series by Rachel Caine – Following the wife of a serial killer as she tries to move on with her life and gets mixed up in other dangerous situations.
  • Lily Bard series by Charlaine Harris – Lily is just trying to stay quiet in a new life after leaving a violent past behind. Gets caught up in a murder investiigation when she sees thebody being dumped in town.
  • Aurora Teagarden Series by Charlain Harris – A Librarian who runs a local crime fiction bookclub start solving murders in their small town.
  • Harper Connolly Series by Charlaine Harris – Follows Harper who can see the final moments of someone’s life and find out where the dead bodies are.

Some Random Suggestions

  • Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte – Gothic classic about ghosts and spooky house and the mysterious man who lives there!
  • Hearts blood by Juliet Marillier – Fantasy novel that is a Beauty and The Beast re-telling. Might be a little more early winter but very atmospheric and hoes well with fall.
  • The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield – Best described by goodreads: It is a tale of gothic strangeness featuring the Angelfield family, including the beautiful and willful Isabelle, the feral twins Adeline and Emmeline, a ghost, a governess, a topiary garden and a devastating fire.
  • The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova – The story about a woman’s quest to find out who Vlad The Impaler really was. I feel like anything Dracula related is a good fall read!
