When the man had arrived a few minutes earlier, Dree had noticed him as soon as he’d touched the bar, a few people away from where she’d been sitting. She was pretty sure half the people in the Buddha Bar had watched him cross the room and order a drink before they broke his spell and went back to their own, now-troubled conversations, but they were still sneaking glances at him.

The tall man had smiled easily while he ordered a drink, his gaze serene while he surveyed the crowd. He was really tall, too. His head stuck up above everyone else’s like they were a black-and-blond ocean and he was swimming with his head held high out of the waves, lest he soak his dark, curling hair that swayed over his forehead and neck. He looked like he was a white guy with a tan, or he might be olive-skinned, like from somewhere near the Mediterranean Sea. Something about him made her feel like a fish drawn to an irresistible lure.

When he twisted, turning toward Dree, his white tee shirt pulled taut over his broad, muscular chest and shoulders. The pristine cotton clung to the rounds of his massive pectorals, the ripples of his abdominal muscles, and his obliques that cut diagonal slices from his ribs to the waistband of his trousers.

Oh, somebody worked out.

Dree had to respect the time in the gym, even though she did not go to the gym nearly as much as he obviously did.

Or ever, really. The hospital where she worked had a gym, and she had been meaning to start going there for three years.

The man’s dark dress pants contrasted oddly with his plain white tee, which looked like it might be an undershirt. If it had clung to his skin any more tightly, she would have thought he had just won a wet-tee-shirt contest. She could see every one of his eight-pack of abdominal muscles, even those top ones nestled under his pecs.

Just wow.

When Dree leaned back to observe the guy’s backside, his legs were long and thick with muscle.

Between his incongruous clothes, tousled black curls, and sleepy blinks, the guy looked like he’d left his suit jacket, shirt, and tie on someone’s bedroom floor and sauntered into the bar for a drink.

That man could throw his clothes on Déchirée Dree’s floor anytime.

She was so drunk. This was not like her, but tonight, anything seemed possible. Everything seemed possible.

She wanted to touch him. The tequila shots she’d sucked down made her body feel languorous and heavy, and she wanted a tall, strong, sexy man to touch her, drive her backward with the warmth of his male body, and move above her and inside her with slow, sinuous thrusts, his faint masculine musk surrounding her and driving her out of her mind.

The deliberate way that man lifted his drink to his mouth—when he touched the highball glass to his full, lower lip before he tilted it, the liquid flowed in, and he swallowed—made Dree think he would be incredible in bed, that he’d take his time, that he’d know what he was doing to her.

The inside of her mouth watered like she wanted to lick him.

And he was still staring back at her, his dark eyes serious and almost wary.

He took the glass away from his mouth like he was stripping off his shirt for her to see his naked flesh.

Dree was leaning so far toward him that she nearly fell off her chair.

A new guy inserted himself into her view, jamming himself into the narrow space between Dree and the petite, judgy woman sitting next to her.

Dree looked up.

The new guy’s red silk shirt was unbuttoned to his waist, exposing a thatch of black chest hair. “Bonsoir.”

Gentle sunlight glowed upon the faun’s face. Willow branches cast their slender shadows onto the grassy banks of the spring, shading us from the gilded morning light.

She looked peaceful there as I knelt over her; she was asleep, head nestled in the dewy grass. I had heard so much about this Princess Dawn – and now I was finally seeing her.

I had heard she lived in a secluded kingdom, somewhere bright and beautiful. A realm of vibrant flowers and alluring aromas, quiet green places latticed by cool, meandering streams. A perfect place, as perfect in its natural beauty as it was in its isolation.

I looked up to the surrounding garden and waved my riders over; as silent as prowling cats the uyrguks slunk out from the brush. I gestured to the sleeping princess. Wordlessly they bound her, picked her up.

I cast a gaze up to the keep. No curtains in the windows stirred; no guards looked down from the battlements. There was nothing to fear; Naraya was safe. Naraya was the capital. And the princess could look after herself.

I smiled. My, had they been wrong.

The uyrguks carried the princess through the garden and slung her over the back of my horse. Then, after a moment lingering in the garden as all was still and the sun was rising, I followed after them.

Steam plumed from the horses’ nostrils in the cool spring air. I was cold too; my clothes were damp from the morning dew. It had been a long, long night of lying in wait.

I mounted up and my riders did the same. I surveyed the garden, the private spring, the imposing shoulders of the royal keep. Still no one stirred; clearly my careful preparation was paying off. No guards, no handmaidens, no attendants… the perfect kidnapping.

I looked back at Princess Dawn, slung like a slain deer behind me, antlers and all. The perfect kidnapping.

I smiled to myself, relieved that my task was coming to fruition, my debts that much closer to absolution.

Then I looked up to the sun crawling steadily over the teeth of faraway mountains.

The princess was mine. It was almost all over. The cool sense of relief that washed through me matched the crisp spring breeze.

I spurred my horse and rode away.

Reading Round Up: October 11th-20th

Hello Book Friends! I can’t believe that October is almost over, I feel like it just started! My reading has slowed down a little because I am trying to make my way through a book that keeps scaring me so Im not really picking up a ton right now. Hopefully the rest of the month goes a little better for me. Here’s what I have been reading.

Immortal Angel (#31) by Lynsay Sands – 3 Stars – I always love returning to this series as it has some of my favorite characters ever. However, with a series this large not every book will be a winner. While I still enjoyed the story and being back with these characters I just wasn’t particularly attached to our two main characters. I will still be continuing with the next in this series!

Home Before Dark – by Riley Sager – 4 Stars – Audio – This was my first Riley Sager and I don’t think it will be my last. Overall I thought this book was enjoyable, loved the audio narration. We are following two different time lines so it was nice with the different narrators. I am not usually a fan of different time lines but in this one it worked well because we were getting snippets of a story that the main characters dad wrote about their time at Baneberry Hall and then we get her present day living in the same house. If you like stories about creepy houses than I think you should definitely pick this one up!

Bite Me (#9) by Shelly Laurenston – 4 Stars This is like the third time I have read this book and I still love it. Shelly has a way of writing her characters that feels both real and absurd at the same time and I am here for it! In this book we finally get introduced to the Honeybadger shifters and they are by far my favorite! I also love to watch the video about honeybadgers not caring, so good!!! If you like funny, steamy shifter romances be sure to check out this series!

His and Hers by Alice Feeney – Audio – 3 Stars Im not sure where to even start with this one! I got the audio for this from librofm and I am glad I was listening to it rather than reading, I think I would have dnf’d it otherwise. We are following three characters and how they are all involved in a murder. The story had some graphic scenes that I was not comfortable with and I was not a fan of the conclusion. However, I still think its an interesting story and believe others will still enjoy it.

Hot and Badgered (#1) by Shelly Laurenston – 4 Stars This is the first book in the spinoff series that deals with three sisters that are honeybadgers! In this story we are following Charlie who is the oldest. All three have some major difficulties and I find them so funny! I also love all the bears in this book! Highly recommend if you are wanting a super fun shifter romance!

I am a patient. My job is to lie in this bed. I do my job well. Who I would be at home is less clear. And nobody would be there, beside themselves with relief that I am back.

I’d have to do things, necessary things – plus other things I would have to do just to be seen to be doing something.

Doing things makes me tired.

Doing things leads to other things, and things have a habit of changing when you’d got used to them being a certain way.

My heart broke. My body broke.

The bailiffs came for a cone-shaped piece. What exactly do you people want from me?

I didn’t have obsessive compulsive disorder when I came in but might well have it by the time I leave (an okay trade?). There is precious little to do but notice things and how often they occur.

Times per hour I assess how my wound site is feeling: about seven.

Times per day I remember to visualise a healthy wound site: maybe one.

Number of days with a Tupperware lid of cloud cover outside: six.

(The sheets, the walls, the sky – all the colour of bone.

Am I that colour too? I have no mirror to tell otherwise.

Maybe everyone who goes under anaesthetic wakes up in this world of bone, while their previous lives continue somewhere else.)

Minutes per day the nurses listen to a facile breakfast DJ: 120.

Minutes per day I am now able to breathe behind the radio and tune it out: 40.

Times per day I imagine being outdoors for hours on end: one, but it lasts awhile.

Times per day I notice that my left foot sits higher under the sheet than my right: about a dozen.

Times per day I speak: zero.

Times per day I make eye contact with the parent who has come to visit: on arrival only. (I will not cry in a room with a half glass wall, with a person who has to leave afterwards.)

Times per hour I remember what other people have to cope with in life: one, if I make myself.

Times per day I imagine a year from now, when things could be very different: zero, initially, now up to two or three.

Times per hour the perma-grin nurse sings out to the woman opposite, ‘Feeling okay, Nancy?’: too many. (I am waiting for Nancy to be discharged or die.)

Kate Tough worked for the Scottish Parliament for six years before returning to her home city, gaining a Masters in Creative Writing from the University of Glasgow. She writes poetry and fiction rooted in realism, humour and sometimes difficult truths.

Book Haul

Hello Book Friends! I recently went to a library book sale and came home with 20 books! I was trying to fill in some gaps with some older series but there are always other books that jump out out at me!

The first two I got are some Holiday Romances! I am already ready for the cozy reads for the next two months!

Reading Round Up: October 1st – 10th
