Springtime Book Tag

I saw this tag on Heather from Bookables youtube channel and I though it would be a fun easy tag to do. The original can be found on Little Wolf’s channel .

How do you decorate your bookshelf?

I don’t really decorate my shelves seasonally. I tend to put up what I like and keep it there till something new comes along that I like more.

Recommend a book with beautiful nature description.

I am going to go with Nalini Singh’s A Madness of Sunshine. This book is all about the nature descriptions and she does an amazing job with getting the setting just right. Also the cover is just stunning.

Show us a book with a beautiful cover, Spring is about fresh starts, great time to start a series, what would you recommend?

Both of these covers make me think of spring. Next Year In Havana’s cover is so pretty and pastel which always gives me spring vibes! This is the first in a series of 4 so far and only the first two should be read in order. They all follow different woman who are from Cuba but set in different times and the struggles they go through.

The second cover is The Forever Girl by Jill Shalvis. This is book #6 in the Wildstone series but it can be read out of order because thats what I did. This book is about second chances and learning to move on with life. Great for a Springtime read.

It’s almost time to start reading outside, have you been brave enough?

Not yet! In Colorado our Spring doesn’t really come till May and even then we still get snow then sometimes as well. But once it’s nice I can’t wait to put my hammock back up and read in it.

Spring cleaning, what are some books you’re planning to unhaul?

I do unhauls very regularly I just never document them. I probably get rid of a bag of books every few weeks.

Follow up, which ones will you replace them with?

I replace them with all kinds of books! Check out my thrift hauls if you are interested!

Reading Round Up: March 1st – 10th

Hi Friends! I am here today with my first round up of the month. So far I have read 4 books and three of them had 5 stars! I don’t think I could pick a favorite as they were all great! I was hoping to get in some reading this past weekend as we got over 2 feet of snow here in Colorado but I didn’t end up getting much read. Instead I was bundled up on the couch watching movies and playing games with the family. How was your weekend?

Marriage and Murder by Penny Reid – 3 Stars This is the second book in Penney Reid’s cozy mystery series featuring Cletus and Jen from Beard Science. At their engagement party there ends up being a shooting and some ends up dead so this book is them trying to find the killer. While Jen and Cletus are one of my favorite couples ever, I really struggled with this one. I felt really disconnected from the characters for the first 2/3’s of the book but the last third was great and was what I was used to seeing with Penny’s books. I also think this could be a me thing as I am in a pretty big reading slump and not enjoying most of my reads like I normally do. One of my favorite scenes in this entire series is when Cletus is talking with his eldest brother Jethro about why he turned from a life in a motorcycle gang to became the person he is now.  It was so great getting that information about my second favorite Winston brother.  If you have read any of the Winston Brother’s books than I highly recommend these cozy mysteries. It would be best if you read Beard Science before these but not necessarily the other’s in the original series. Thank you to Social Butterfly PR for letting me be a part of the blog tour.

Heartbreak Bay by Rachel Caine – 5 Stars  I just have to say that I love this series and I am so sad we won’t get anymore. I have been reading Rachel Caine’s books for years but this thriller series was my favorite. Im so sad that she passed away and we won’t get any more of her books. Heartbreak Bay was the fifth in the series that follows the ex-wife of a serial killer and what she and her family goes through because of this. In this one we are following Gwen and her bff who is a local cop, as they get lured into a trap that might not end well.  I really love the friends that Gwen has gathered around her who know her original identity and do not hold her ex-husbands deeds against her. If you love tough females who go above and beyond then this series might be for you. I really can’t say enough about this series, if you haven’t read it yet I highly recommend it! Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for my gifted copy for review.

The Good Sister by Sally Hepworth – 5 Stars This book had me hooked from the very beginning! Rose and Fern are twin sisters who had a difficult upbringing and as adults are still dealing with things from their past. We get present day perspectives from Fern who has sensory issues and works as a Librarian and we also follow Rose through journal entries. From the very beginning I loved Fern and was so invested in her storyline, her and Wally were just too cute. I will say that I found this to be very predictable and had it figured out in the first 1/4 of the book but that didn’t take away any of the enjoyment I got from following their story. Highly recommend if you are looking for a good sibling mystery/thriller. Thank you to St. Martins Press and Librofm for my gifted copy for review.

Sandcastle Beach by Jenny Holiday – 5 Stars Enemies to lovers is my all time favorite trope and when its set in a small town, you know it’s going to be good. Maya runs the local theater in her small town and is also in a silent war with a local bar owner Benjamin “Law” Lawson. When the town decides to give out a grant to one local business owner, the stakes in their silent war go up as they are both wanting that money. I loved Maya and Ben’s relationship, my favorite parts are when they go on temporary truces so she can watch the Premier League games on his TV upstairs. Slowly the two realize maybe there is more to them than these short truces. This was a very fun story and I loved the town so much, now I just need to go back and read the other books in this series. Thank you to Forever Publishing for my gifted copy for review.

Thrift Store Book Haul #4

Hello Friends! I seem to have a problem of not saying no to a thrift store. I try to be good and tell my self I don’t need to look and then I get fomo of all the books that could be waiting for me on the shelves. So in I go and out I come with more books. These were the last books I thrifted in February.

Outlawed by Anna North – I was tempted to get this one for my BOTM but decided against it, so I was pretty happy to find it.

In A Holidaze by Christina Lauren – I read this one a couple months ago and while I didn’t love it I like to have physical copies of their books.

Someone We Know by Shari Lapena – This was her new one last year but hadn’t picked it up yet. I have really enjoyed the other books I have read by her.

On The Way To The Wedding by Julia Quinn – This is #8 in The Bridgerton series.

Mirror Mirror – Has an In Death short story by JD Robb.

Brazen And The Beast by Sarah MacLean – Love a good Beauty and The Beast retelling.

A Highlander Walks Into A Bar by Laura Trentham – I started this from the library a while ago but never got to finish it.

Origin in Death by JD Robb – When I find them cheap I pick up books in this series.

Vengeance In Death by JD Robb – Same

Imitation in Death by JD Robb – Same

Christmas at Little Beach Street Bakery by Jenny Colgan – Her books are cute and this one was Christmas themed.

Good Girls Lie by J.T. Ellison – Heard good things about this author.

Touch and Go by Lisa Gardner – Trying to get all of her books.

What Lies Between Us by John Marrs – Really want to get to him this year.

Loud Mouth by Avery Flynn – Started this one from the library but didn’t get to finish it.

Dirty Rowdy Thing by Christina Lauren – Love this series by Christina Lauren so trying to get them all in physical books.

Have you read any of these? Let me know your thoughts below!

Blog Tour: Float Plan by Trish Doller

About The Book

Heartbroken by the loss of her fiancé, adventurous Anna finds a second chance at love with an Irish sailor in this riveting, emotional romance.

After a reminder goes off for the Caribbean sailing trip Anna was supposed to take with her fiancé, she impulsively goes to sea in the sailboat he left her, intending to complete the voyage alone.

But after a treacherous night’s sail, she realizes she can’t do it by herself and hires Keane, a professional sailor, to help. Much like Anna, Keane is struggling with a very different future than the one he had planned. As romance rises with the tide, they discover that it’s never too late to chart a new course.

In Trish Doller’s unforgettable Float Plan, starting over doesn’t mean letting go of your past, it means making room for your future.

“The perfect escape. Fresh, funny, and romantic. I wish I could sail away with this book.” – Meg Cabot, New York Times bestselling author of The Princess Diaries and Little Bridge series

My Thoughts

This book really took me by surprise. Death of a partner or spouse is not something I am usually drawn to but from the minute I started this book I could not put it down. I stopped reading my current book and binged this one in less than 24 hours.

The story starts out with Anna who is still dealing with the death of her fiance and wakes up one morning to the notification that it was the day they were supposed to start sailing around the Caribbean. After she barley makes it safely to her first port Anna decides to hire a sailor to get her to Puerto Rico. Keane Sullivan is also dealing with some loss of his own and the trip turns out to be healing for both of them.

I loved Anna and Keane’s story so much. It was a lesson in learning to let the past go but not forgotten and to try and start over when it doesn’t seem like you can. Anna went through a lot of inner turmoil and I loved her journey that she too on the boat, with starting out thinking of it as her late finace’s to in the end it being truly hers. I loved all the history and information that the author gave us on all the islands that Anna and Keane went to on their trip. I am not one for water travel but this book seriously made me want to sail around the Caribbean Islands for a few months. This book combined with another recent read really has me wanting a tropical vacation and warmer weather.

I highly recommend this book! There are some serious topics talked about in the book so if you are interested I would look into trigger warnings. Thank you St.Martin’s Press for my gifted copy for review.

Reading Round Up: February 21st-28th

Hello friends! How is everyone doing? Hopefully safe and healthy. So after my last round up being so good it looks like I hit a slump. I had the best of intentions to get a few arcs read but I struggled with them and ended up finding anything else I could do because I didn’t want to pick up the books. So for my last round up I only finished 2 books. Here’s hoping next month is better.

Yes & I Love You by Roni Loren – 3 Stars Hollyn is a blogger in New Orleans who goes by the name of Miz Poppy and reviews local events and restaurants. Her boss comes to her and says she needs to start going in front of the camera or she will loose her job. Hollyn who has Tourettes and is not a fan of this enlists the help of improve actor Jasper to help her prepare. Overall this book was just okay for me I had a hard time with the main romance and felt like it was kind of forced. However, I liked the authors writing style and will pick up her next book in the series. I also really enjoyed the Tourettes representation in this book both the main character and her best friend have it, I don’t think I have ever read a book with a main character who has it. Thank you Sourcebooks Casablanca for my gifted copy.

Finlay Donovan is Killing It by Elle Cosimano – 3 Stars Finlay Donovan is divorced, trying to keep custody of her two kids and is late on her deadline for her publisher. While meeting with her agent she is overheard by the woman next to her who mistakingly thinks that Finlay is a killer for hire instead of a romantic suspense author. What follows is a series of events that leads Finlay and her nanny Vera on a crazy adventure. Overall this was a quick read and was pretty entertaining but I had some trouble with parts of it. I am not a fan of when more than person instantly falls for the main character on just a first impression, this book has a couple of these and it just turns me off. While I had some problems with it I did like the writing style and will be picking up the next book if this becomes a series because the ending really left us wanting more. Thank you St, Martin’s Press, Minotaur and netgalley for my gifted copy.

Blog Tour and Review: Marriage and Murder by Penny Reid

The Devil is in the details . . .

Marriage and Murder, an-all new quirky and witty cozy mystery and second book in the Solving for Pie: Cletus and Jenn Mysteries from New York Times bestselling author Penny Reid is available now!

Cletus Byron Winston wishes to marry Jennifer Anne Donner-Sylvester (aka The Banana Cake Queen) posthaste! He’s spent the last year wanting nothing more than for the celebrations to be brief, libations flowing, and BYOB (bring your own blueberries). His future mother-in-law has other plans, plans his intended has been willing to indulge, much to Cletus’s chagrin. Therefore, so must he. To a point. But truth be told, he wouldn’t mind if the meddlesome matriarch disappeared, at least until the nuptials are over.

On the night of Cletus and Jenn’s long-awaited engagement party, just when the surly schemer is of a mind to take matters into his own hands, a shocking event upends everyone’s best laid plans and sends the small hamlet of Green Valley into complete disarray. The final months leading up to Cletus and Jenn’s matrimonial bliss are plagued with chaos and uncertainty. Will Cletus and Jenn finally make it to the altar? Or will murder and mayhem derail their happily-ever-after?

And most importantly, who done it?

‘Marriage and Murder’ is the second book in the cozy mystery series Solving for Pie: Cletus and Jenn Mysteries. It is best read after Winston Brothers #3, ‘Beard Science’ (which can be read as a standalone) and Solving for Pie: Cletus and Jenn Mysteries #1, ‘Engagement and Espionage.’

My Thoughts

While Jenn and Cletus are one of my favorite couples ever, I really struggled with this one. I felt really disconnected from the characters for the first 2/3’s of the book but the last third was great and was what I was used to seeing with Penny’s books. I had a hard time getting into the mystery and some of the more intimate scenes felt out of place to me. It was still a great read and if your a fan of Penny’s writing I think you will love this one too. I do think the difficulty I had connecting to this book was a me thing as I am in a pretty big reading slump and not enjoying most of my reads like I normally do.

One of my favorite scenes in this entire series is when Cletus is talking with his eldest brother Jethro about why he turned from a life in a motorcycle gang to became the person he is now.  It was so great getting that information about my second favorite Winston brother.  I also loved getting some insight into his sister Ashley and her husband Drew on why they still haven’t gotten married after all these years. This scene really broke my heart but it was so moving.

I loved this quote from Cletus talking to Jenn towards the end of the book; “You have a future and it will be beautiful. Having a beautiful future doesn’t lessen what you’ve lived through, it doesn’t mean you’re not grieving hard enough or that you’re ignoring weighty matters. It means you honor everything you’ve been through, all the hellish obstacles, and you recognize that you’re worthy of happiness, of beauty, of peace.”

If you have read any of the Winston Brother’s books than I highly recommend these cozy mysteries. It would be best if you read Beard Science before these but not necessarily the other’s in the original series.

March (Maybe) TBR

Hello friends! I am here today with my March reading plans. This is a tentative TBR because I get so moody I don’t know what I will want to read next. I was planning on not as much romance this month as I was getting a little bored with my reads so I was thinking about some thrillers that are really high on my list. I recently found out that there is a challenge going around in March called March Mystery Madness, you can find the creators announcement video here. So I am going to try and read as many mystery/thrillers as I can this month. I still have some arc’s and other books I would like to get to as well so we shall see what I actually read.

For my back list books (which is any book I bought prior to January 1st 2021)

I have been really bad about reading my backlist so Im hoping I can do better this month. Not sure what I will choose but I have a few options.

I have some buddy reads as well this month as well as some ARCs that I need to get too.

  • I will be reading Saving Grace by Debbie Babitt as a buddy read and it is also an ARC.
  • The Little French Bridal Shop by Jennifer Dupee- ARC
  • A Deadly Chapter by Essie Lang – ARC
  • Perfect on Paper by Sophie Gonzales – ARC
  • Every Last Fear by Alex Finlay – ARC

For Kayla’s Buzzword – This month’s word is Time and should be in the title.

I think I am going to read The Last Time I Lied by Riley Sager but I have a few on my kindle that could work for this as well.

March Mystery Madness Prompts

  • Time – The Last Time I Lied by Riley Sager
  • Space – Moonshine and Murder by Kathleen Brooks ( going with moon here )
  • Person – Saving Grace by Debbie Babitt
  • Place – The Sanitorium by Sarah Pearse
  • Weather – White Out by Danielle Girard because a white out is caused by a blizzard
  • Single – Fracture by Megan Miranda ( also a backlist )
  • Color – Going to double up on this and go with White Out again
  • Number – Truth, Lies and Second Dates by MaryJanice Davidson
  • A book you bought because of the title – Quiet In Her Bones by Nalini Singh

Other Books I would like to try and get too.

  • The Ex-Talk by Rachel Lynn Solomon
  • The Push by Ashley Audrain
  • Written In The Stars by Alexandria Bellefleur – Library book
  • From Blood and Ash by Jennifer L. Armentrout – Library book
  • Highland Treasure by Lynsay Sands – Library book
  • The House in the Cerulean Sea by T.J. Klune – Library book
  • The Flip Side by James Bailey – Library book

Again these are all books that I would like to read soon but I know I probably won’t get to most of these. What are you reading this month? Are you participating in any fun reading challenges?

Book Blitz: Skeletons by Natalie Rodriguez

Skeletons
Natalie Rodriguez
Publication date: February 26th 2021
Genres: Contemporary, Thriller, Young Adult

When was the last time you confronted the skeletons in your closest?

Immediately following book one, “Elephant,” Matthew “Matty” Smith awakens from his coma and discovers that his worst nightmare is all true: his grandmother, Jamie, and Derek have gone missing and his mother murdered his father and grandfather years ago.

With the hospital placing him on lockdown, including no visitation rights by his loved ones such as his best friend, Lisa, Matty finds himself deteriorating into a state of the abyss, consumed with the secrets of his family. Convinced that it was the ‘stranger’ who kidnapped his grandmother and friends, no one believes him. The hospital only believes that Matty is slipping into a toxic mental state, repeating the cycle of his family.

Until one day, Lisa helps Matty escape the hospital.

On the run from Dr. Brown, Officer Barry, and the town of La Crosse, Wisconsin, Matty and Lisa set off to find their friends and Lucia and for answers on who the ‘stranger’ is. Once they unmask who the ‘stranger’ is, Matty continues to unravel the deepest secrets of what was supposed to be forever hidden in the Smith family as well as the town.

This story is for those who feel their voice is unheard and for children, teenagers, and adults who never had the chance to heal from their pain.

EXCERPT:

DELICATELY, MATT’S EYES OPENED to a world of white haze. All the objects were silhouettes. That was until, Dr. Brown poked through the gust of blurriness.

“Thank God! You’re up,” he wheezed.

Matt peered around. The sunlight poured into Room 402, inch by inch. He was in the room as usual. The streaks of sunlight hit the edge of the hospital bed before it dazzled on his skin. His skin was cold and so…fair. Slimmer, shades of purple and pink concaved his cheekbones—a shade of baby blue muddled his skin.

“Ah,” Matt groaned, once Dr. Brown flashed a miniature flashlight back and forth at his eyes.

At least the reaction was a good sign—the teenage patient could see.

Then, a nurse closed the curtains. It was back to the darkened and sinister atmosphere that gobbled up Matt.

“I don’t feel too well,” he said, barely audible, as the middle of his bottom lips splintered with red.

Another nurse dabbed a tissue against his mouth. He took control of it, as though he was refusing another medical employee’s touch.

“It’s because you’ve been in a coma for four weeks,” Dr. Brown chimed in with his patient.

“I…What?”

Matt scanned the room until his vision settled upon what should have been Captain Obvious to him. His wrists, ankles, and chest were no longer strapped to the bed. Instead, all three areas of his body were wrapped-up. The white puffy bandages resembled the texture of clouds on a springtime afternoon.

While Matt’s eyes grew lukewarm, he hoisted his noodle size wrists closer to his eyes. “Wha—Wha—What happened?” he asked.

“You had an anxiety attack and went into shock…” It seemed that Dr. Brown dreaded the moment, even though he had scripted out his dialogue for when Matt reawakened, like any good doctor would do.

“Sorry, it’s just…I’m not sure…Matt, I’m not sure just how much you remember at all.”

The outside world. It was breathtaking, as the cotton ball clouds sailed across the sky like ships out to sea.

“What’s the date?” Matt asked moments later.

It appeared that the truth cuffed at Dr. Brown’s heart. “August 5th,” he said.

Matt winced at the impossible and yet, the possible. He broke down into tears and sheltered his face. Just then, his palms met a rigid paper that was on the bottom of his lip. It made sense now—he was out of it, unaware of what was a possibility…and the impossible…

He cried even more.

“Your lip bled on and off. The white bandage cloth was too big.” Slowly, but surely, Dr. Brown reached out for his patient. He slid his fingers atop Matt’s hand and gave it a pat. “Thankfully Lisa brought in a Spiderman bandage. She said you’re a fan of the franchise. I heard there’s going to be another installment…”

Dr. Brown gave a nervous chuckle. Cat scrabbled onto Matt’s tongue, left speechless and almost…numb.

“You know,” Dr. Brown started again, “she comes to visit you almost every day. Usually around lunchtime. She’ll be real happy that you’re awake.”

He did not reply.

“Look, Matt, I know you’re exhausted”—Dr. Brown selected his words cautiously—“I get that. You’ll need more rest. I just hope you can talk to us. Whenever you’re ready.”

The pain took over Matt, as his leg gave a spasm. “I don’t understand how time flies by so…fast…”

Silence.

“Your heart was beating in a peculiar pattern,” Dr. Brown said. “At first, it was pumping at a rapid rate. And then, it was beating…slowly. And then, it went quickly again.”

Off the doc’s studying look, Matt asked, “What?”

“I just can’t get that image out of my head. After Lisa was removed from the room, we discharged the bed straps from your body when you began to lose…You lost a lot of blood.”

Matt’s eyes descended to his wrists; his mind illustrated all the possibilities and what the memory for both Dr. Brown and his colleagues must have appeared like: nurses and doctors rotated and took his pulse, as well as patched up the holes where the blood oozed out.

For some reason, Matt saw it. He imagined that his own blood was a zombie-gut neon green, just like the classic horror films.

But it frightened him, and he shut his eyes to erase the horrific illustration. The image stayed with him anyhow.

“Matt?” Dr. Brown’s voice echoed through Matt’s state of horror.

“Where was I bleeding?” It was mostly rhetorical, as Matt tried to digest the imminent response. “Where was the blood coming from?”

When Matt’s eyes peeled open, they were red with angst. Dr. Brown pointed to the upper half of his patient’s chest.

“The scars,” Dr. Brown answered. “Lisa—she swore you were dead when she saw us trying to stop the blood.” He sniffled and coughed, as though the rest of the alphabet clogged up his throat. “We all saw the scars when the blood eventually…came to a stop.”

Matt glanced away. For a moment, he almost fooled himself while the tears streamed down his face.

Dr. Brown was tentative until, “A worldwide search was put out two weeks ago. Matt…” Compressing his fist with his mouth, he prevented a scream. “Matt…”

Cat got his tongue.

Matt noticed and watched as anxiety and pain consumed his doctor’s shaken body. Before the Spiderman bandage detached from Matt’s cherry rose lips, Dr. Brown ascended to his feet.

“Excuse me,” was all he said before he scampered out of Room 402.

“Dr. Brown?” Matt listened to his doctor’s fancy schmancy shoes swerve across the tile. The fretful voices of nurses and doctors echoed throughout the hallway as they called out for their boss’s attention.

“Doctor…” Even Matt’s voice was lost. “Brown?”

Wherever his doctor fled, Matt saw no other reason but to wait…and wait for him. He sniffled, and with a revelation, he gasped. He remembered…and his eyes returned to the cheese holes in the ceiling. ‘They’re missing…They believe you. You are not or will ever be alone again.’
