Marriage and Murder, an-all new quirky and witty cozy mystery and second book in the Solving for Pie: Cletus and Jenn Mysteries from New York Times bestselling author Penny Reid is available now!

Cletus Byron Winston wishes to marry Jennifer Anne Donner-Sylvester (aka The Banana Cake Queen) posthaste! He’s spent the last year wanting nothing more than for the celebrations to be brief, libations flowing, and BYOB (bring your own blueberries). His future mother-in-law has other plans, plans his intended has been willing to indulge, much to Cletus’s chagrin. Therefore, so must he. To a point. But truth be told, he wouldn’t mind if the meddlesome matriarch disappeared, at least until the nuptials are over.
On the night of Cletus and Jenn’s long-awaited engagement party, just when the surly schemer is of a mind to take matters into his own hands, a shocking event upends everyone’s best laid plans and sends the small hamlet of Green Valley into complete disarray. The final months leading up to Cletus and Jenn’s matrimonial bliss are plagued with chaos and uncertainty. Will Cletus and Jenn finally make it to the altar? Or will murder and mayhem derail their happily-ever-after?
And most importantly, who done it?
‘Marriage and Murder’ is the second book in the cozy mystery series Solving for Pie: Cletus and Jenn Mysteries. It is best read after Winston Brothers #3, ‘Beard Science’ (which can be read as a standalone) and Solving for Pie: Cletus and Jenn Mysteries #1, ‘Engagement and Espionage.’

My Thoughts
While Jenn and Cletus are one of my favorite couples ever, I really struggled with this one. I felt really disconnected from the characters for the first 2/3’s of the book but the last third was great and was what I was used to seeing with Penny’s books. I had a hard time getting into the mystery and some of the more intimate scenes felt out of place to me. It was still a great read and if your a fan of Penny’s writing I think you will love this one too. I do think the difficulty I had connecting to this book was a me thing as I am in a pretty big reading slump and not enjoying most of my reads like I normally do.
One of my favorite scenes in this entire series is when Cletus is talking with his eldest brother Jethro about why he turned from a life in a motorcycle gang to became the person he is now. It was so great getting that information about my second favorite Winston brother. I also loved getting some insight into his sister Ashley and her husband Drew on why they still haven’t gotten married after all these years. This scene really broke my heart but it was so moving.
I loved this quote from Cletus talking to Jenn towards the end of the book; “You have a future and it will be beautiful. Having a beautiful future doesn’t lessen what you’ve lived through, it doesn’t mean you’re not grieving hard enough or that you’re ignoring weighty matters. It means you honor everything you’ve been through, all the hellish obstacles, and you recognize that you’re worthy of happiness, of beauty, of peace.”
If you have read any of the Winston Brother’s books than I highly recommend these cozy mysteries. It would be best if you read Beard Science before these but not necessarily the other’s in the original series.
