Let’s Talk Bookish – August 13th

Friday’s are for The Let’s Talk Bookish Meme which is a weekly meme created and hosted by Rukky@EternityBooks and Dani@Literary Lion and todays topic is: CAN BOOKS BE EFFECTIVE HORROR? (DANI)

I am pretty excited for this prompt as I have started adding more horror books to my reading and am really enjoying the ones I am picking up.

Some people love to be scared – others not so much. When it comes to reading do you think books can be scary? Absolutely and in more than one way. So far the scariest book I have read is a YA book called Horrid by Katrina Leno, I couldn’t even finish it because I was so disturbed. I am hoping to finish it this fall.

Are you less scared because there are no pictures? Not at all, one of my favorite parts of reading is how I see it in my head. I wouldn’t say I see a movie but I do get a pretty good visual in my head while reading.

Do you feel other mediums such as film are more effective for horror? Yes!! I am a big chicken and pretty much refuse to watch scary movies. I honestly think The Ring is the only scary movie I have seen besides a few of the Screams and I Know What You Did Last Summer. I am hoping to get a few more under my belt this year because my husband always wants to watch scary movies together.

Have you ever been kept up at night by a book?  I would if I read scary books at night but I know myself and I only read my more tame books before bed.

Here are a few horror books I have read or am planning on reading.

  • The Only Good Indians – 4 Stars
  • Mexican Gothic – 5 Stars
  • Horrid – DNF but going to finish this year
  • My Heart Is A Chainsaw – TBR
  • My Best Friend’s Exorcism – TBR

Do you think books can be scary?

Blog Tour: Totally Folked by Penny Reid

Totally Folked, the all-new folking delightful and bestselling small town contemporary romance from New York Times bestselling author Penny Reid, is available now!

One unforgettable night leads to an unlikely shared connection, and unlikely connections never go unnoticed by the good folks in Green Valley, Tennessee. . .

Jackson James follows the rules. He has to. He’s a sheriff’s deputy in a super small town with a super big personality. However, strict adherence to the law during the day has been enjoyably balanced by rakish rules at night. Jackson, typically happy to protect and serve (and serve, and serve), starts questioning the value of wayward evenings when they begin to feel more like being waylaid rather than getting laid. Could it be that Green Valley’s most eligible—and notorious—bachelor longs for something (and someone) real?

Mega movie star Raquel Ezra follows only one rule: always leave them wanting more. Strict adherence to this single rule has served her well. Studio execs, reporters, audiences, fans, lovers—no one can get enough of the smart, savvy, and sexy bombshell. But when “generous offers” begin to feel more like excessive demands, years of always leaving has the elusive starlet longing for something (and perhaps someone) lasting.

When Raquel abruptly returns to the quirky Tennessee hamlet, her path crosses with the delectable deputy with whom she spent one unforgettable night. Unfortunately, scandal and intrigue soon follow. Raquel and Jackson must decide which is more important: following their rules? Or, at long last, finding something real.

TOTALLY FOLKED is a standalone, contemporary romantic comedy novel and book #1 in the Good Folk: Modern Folktales series.

Excerpt

“Rae. It’s late.”

“I know, but—”

“Rae,” he ground out, using my hold on his hand to bring us back to a stop. I faced him, my stomach erupting in uncertainty butterflies as I encountered the stern line of his jaw and the glittering, frustrated spark behind his eyes. “We need everyone to believe we’re just friends, right? And if we go inside the house, I don’t think I’m a good enough actor to pull that off.”

My mouth formed an O, and I released him, folding my arms over my chest while I wrestled with a strange combination of disappointment and pleasure at his words. I wanted to spend time with him, talk to him, get to know this mystery of a man so I could understand my feelings better.

But . . . I conceded his point.

We couldn’t seem to be around each other without kissing. Bringing him inside a dark, empty house in the middle of the night was something better left to my fantasies.

For now.

Oh really, inner voice? Now you’re impudent? Now?

He exhaled a short breath, it also sounded frustrated, but his tone was soft as he said, “Hey.”

I placed a tight smile on my face, it was the best I could manage. “Hey.”

Jackson seemed to be considering me, debating what to do next. He didn’t take too long. “Do you want to go for a drive?”

“Yes,” I said immediately. “Yes, I do. Let me grab a jacket.”

“Okay. I’ll wait here.” He shifted his weight to his back foot and hooked his thumbs in his jeans pockets.

I wanted to take a picture of him like this, all handsome reluctance and sexy self-control. This man, he just did something to me. I couldn’t explain it.

But maybe if we took this drive and spent some time together talking—just talking—I’d start to figure it out.

Reading Round Up: July 21st-31st

Happy National Book Lover’s Day!!! I hope everyone had a great weekend and that their week is starting off well. Here are the last 4 books I read in July!

The Guilt Trip by Sandie Jones – 4.5 Stars I was a little skeptical going into this book because I am not a fan when a group of people who have been friends for years go on a trip and secrets will be revealed. But I am a fan isolated mysteries so I was going to give this one chance and I am glad I did! In this one we are following Rachel and Noah we have been friends for 20+ years and they go to wedding with their spouses. The groom is Rachel’s brother-in-law and she thinks that his fience and her husband were having an affair, soon things are revealed and the three couples will never be the same again. I liked all 3 couples and even though I knew things were going to get bad I was still rooting for all of them! Highly recommend this one! Thank you St. Martin’s Press, Minotaur and Macmillon for my gifted copies for review.

Love Next Door by Helena Hunting – 3.5 Stars Overall I enjoyed this one as I do almost all of her books. I believe this is also the first in a new series and I am excited to read more about the characters that were introduced in this book. I am especially interested in Dillion’s brother Billy who was going through a tough time in this book. I also liked Dillion and Billy’s childhood friend Aaron, it was briefly mentioned that he disappeared for awhile and then came back to town and no one knows where he was and that really has me intrigued. Thank you Montlake and Social Butterfly PR for gifting me a copy for review. You can read my full review here.

Grave Reservations by Cherie Priest – 4 Stars Leda is a travel agent who is also an inconsistent psychic. After saving the life of Seattle Detective Grady Merritt he enlists Leda in helping him solve a case that has been unsolvable. Turns out his case is also connected to the murder of Leda’s late fiancé that was also never fully explained. Leda and Grady along with Leda’s best friend start doing some unique investigating to see if they can finally solve these murders. I adored Leda so much and thought she was so fun to read about. Leda had such a great support system with her friends and I enjoyed all their scenes together. My favorite parts were the karaoke sessions were Leda would sing a song for someone after holding an object they gave her. This was a fun mystery and I am excited to continue reading this series and hopefully see some developing chemistry between Leda and Grady! Thank you Atria and Netgalley for my gifted copy for review.

The Layover by Lacie Walden – 4 Stars The layover was a fun romance about a flight attendant Ava who is going on her last flight and gets stranded at a tropical resort with her co-worker Jack who she does not like! I really liked the writing of this one and binged it in a just a day or two. At times I was frustrated Ava and how she was handling things but I think that means the author was doing something right. Jack was such a sweetie and I really would have liked more time with him! This is not just a fun romance but also a book about self discovery and coming to accept yourself the way you are and not what you think you should be.

Let’s Talk Bookish – August 6th

Friday’s are for The Let’s Talk Bookish Meme which is a weekly meme created and hosted by Rukky@EternityBooks and Dani@Literary Lion and todays topic is: WHAT IS YOUR POSTING TYPE? (SUGGESTED BY NICOLE @ THOUGHTS STAINED WITH INK)

Everyone blogs differently, how do you do it? I tend to always have blog posts in process, whether this is tags or weekly memes. This helps when I am trying to plan out my posts or if I need something quick if I don’t get to one finished that I wanted to.

Do you schedule posts long before they’re published, how long? It really depends for me, if its a blog tour and I already read and reviewed the book then these will be ready to go but typically I don’t schedule more than a week out unless Im going on vacation.

Do you write several drafts of a post and edit them, or do you not edit at all? I pretty much just write a post and then publish it. I try to read it over to make sure it flows and there are no grammatical or spelling mistakes and then just hit post.

How do you blog? There’s no right or wrong answer!
