Mid Year Book Freakout Tag

Hello Friends! I am here today with a tag, unfortunately I am not sure who the originator is but I found it on Youtube. If you like tags than consider our self tagged!

1. Best book you’ve read so far in 2021. Romance is either Float Plan by Trisha Dollar or Twice Shy by Sarah Hogle and for thriller it’s between The Good Sister by Sally Hepworth or Heartbreak Bay by Rachel Caine.

2. Best sequel you’ve read so far in 2021. Far Gone by Danielle Girard, Heartbreak Bay by Rachel Caine and Breaking Badger by Shelly Laurenston. I love all 3 of these series and the newest installments were great.

3. New release you haven’t read yet, but want to. There are so many!! But highest on my priority list is The Siren by Katherine St. John, Meet Me In Paradise by Libby and Six Weeks To Live by Catherine McKenzie.

4. Most anticipated release for the second half of the year. There are so many too choose from but Velvet Was The Night by Silvia Moreno-Garcia is really high on my list.

5. Biggest disappointment. Every Vow You Break by Peter Swanson – just didn’t live up to my expectations.

6. Biggest surprise. Float Plan by Trish Dollar – I am not usually a fan of grief filled romances but this one really surprised me. Loved the setting and the two main characters.

7. Favorite new author. (Debut or new to you) Danielle Gerard – I read Whiteout earlier this year and loved it and immediately read Far Gone! Can’t wait to start on her back list!

8. Newest fictional crush. Wesley Koelher from Twice Shy by Sarah Hogle – he was so sweet and cute and grumpy! I always love a good grumpy and sunshine story.

9. Newest favorite character. Fern from The Good Sister by Sally Hepworth. Fern was was a great and complex character. I don’t want to say too much because of spoilers.

10. Book that made you cry. Float Plan and The Last Goodbye both of these fall into the grief romances and both did an excellent job of making me cry.

11. Book that made you happy. Twice Shy and Very Likely Yours by Kerry Winfrey – both of these books have a similar feel to me. They were both such sweet romances.

12. Most beautiful book you’ve bought so far this year (or received). Heard It In A Love Song by Tracey Garvis Graves, won this in a giveaway from the publisher.

13. What books do you need to read by the end of the year? All of them!!

Reading Round Up: June 1st – 10th

Hello friends! I feel like it has been forever since I have posted, I just haven’t felt like I had anything to say or the motivation to try and write anything so I took a small break. I hope everyone is enjoying their summer so far!

Breaking Badger by Shelly Laurenston – 5 Stars I love this series of books about Honey Badger shifters! This is book 4 in the series and we are following Mads who is a Honey Badger shifter who plays basketball and thats all she really cares about. Well that and her teammates! We first met Mads in book 3 and I am so excited we are getting stories for the girls on the basketball team. Mads and her friends also have a side gig and during one they meet up with the Malone Brothers who are Siberian Tiger Shifters. Mads and Finn keep running into each and soon sparks start to fly between them. I would say that the romance takes a pretty big back seat in this book. I still love this series and always enjoying reading the book and catching up with the characters fro previous books. Highly recommend if you are looking for a fun shifter romance series! Thank you to Kensington Books and Netgalley for my gifted copy for review.

The Maidens by Alex Michaelides – 4.5 Stars I have been sitting on this book for a few days because I don’t really know how to talk about it. I personally loved the story and the mystery that is taking place. We are following Mariana Andros who is a therapist and is also still dealing with the death of her husband over a year ago. One night she gets a call from her niece that her friend has gone missing and was hoping that Mariana could come up and be with her. Mariana arrives at Cambridge to find out that her niece’s friend has been murdered and the niece thinks she was killed by her Greek Tragedy Professor. As Mariana deals with being back on campus for the first time since her husbands death and trying be there for her niece she is also caught up in the murder of a young girl and the secrets that are hiding on campus. I really enjoyed this story and all the tie ins to greek tragedies and mythology. I took many classes in college on these subjects and I loved seeing it tie in to this story. The ending really surprised me and I love a good twist!

The Last Goodbye by Fiona Lucas – 4 Stars I am not a typically a fan of what I am starting to call grief romances. I like to read for escapism and that subject is always a little too close to home. However, this one had a different feel then others I have read and I really enjoyed this one. Anna has been dealing with the loss of her husband for the past three years and everyday is a struggle for her. On New Years Eve Anna calls his voicemail just to hear is voice and for the first time in 3 years someone else picks up. Brody has been living a life of solitude with just his dog out on the moors till one night a random phone call sets him on a new path. I loved the friendship that Anna and Brody shared, both dealing with grief that two lean on each other for support when others do not understand. While this book does deal with grief there was also such a sense of hope to it and I really enjoyed that. Thank you William Marrow and Netgalley for my gifted copy for review.

The Big Summer by Jennifer Weiner – 3.5 Stars I have had this book on my shelf for over a year and finally got around to it this month. I need to remember that some of the authors books are not for me, I loved her books in the past but her newer ones have been a miss for me. I feel like lately some woman’s fiction just isn’t working for me but I am glad to say that this one did work. It was a fun summer read and very enjoyable. We are following Plus Size Social Media Influencer Daphne Berg. Six years ago she was humiliated by her best friend Drue Cavanaugh and the two haven’t spoken since until Drue asks Daphne to be in her wedding that summer as her Maid Of Honor. Daphne reluctantly agrees and when the wedding comes something happens that derails Daphne’s life. This book is a little different in that it basically switches genres in the middle of the book. The first part we have a traditional woman’s fiction with a heroine finding love and going through life with her friends. While the second half turns into a sort of cozy mystery. I personally really enjoyed the second half of the book more than the first.

Every Vow You Break by Peter Swanson – 2 Stars This book was such a huge disappointment for me, the cover and the premise gave me hopes that the book did not deliver on. The book starts with our main character Abigail on a girls trip before her wedding and meets a stranger and has a one night stand with him. Back home Abaigail continues on with the wedding and on the day of she thinks she sees that stranger watching her at the reception. Abigail dismisses it but when the stranger shows up on her honeymoon she knows something is up. This had so much potential being that it is set up on a remote island as well as the mystery but it just didn’t deliver. I thought it was just ok the ending wasn’t great and there were so many plot holes that left me with more questions than answers. I have read another book by PeterSwanson that I did enjoy so I will keep reading him for now, this one just didn’t work for me.

Reading Round Up: May 21st-31st

One Got Away by S.A. Lelchuk – 4 Stars One Got Away was fun and fast paced thriller about Private Investigator Nikki Griffin as she is tasked by a very prestigious family with looking into a man who might be swindling the mother. But nothing is as it seems and Nikki gets dragged into something far deeper than just a good looking con man. This was the second book in the Nikki Griffin series and while I wished I had read the book 1 first it did not hinder my ability to enjoy this book. I am going to go back and read it because I really liked Nikki and want to know more about her! Nikki was a fun character to read about, she rides a motorcycle, is somewhat of a private investigator and also owns and runs a bookstore. I enjoyed the mystery and the characters and I can’t wait to read more.

The Man Ban by Nicola Marsh – 3.5 Stars The Man Ban is my second book by Nicola Marsh and while I enjoyed it I did like The Boy Toy more. In this book we are following Harper who is a food stylist and Manny who is a Doctor and we met in the first book. I really enjoyed Manny’s character but at times I felt like he didn’t stay too true too his character at times. This book had great banter between Harper and Manny but it was very insta love. From the first meeting of the two Manny immediately starts chasing after Harper but Harper is on a man ban. Due to a chance encounter Manny and Harper start spending a lot of time together and both develop feelings very quickly. This is where I started to struggle a little with the book, I am not a fan of insta love and this book felt like that. Overall this was a cute read but it was pretty quick and predictable for a romance. If you like cute romances then I would recommend picking this one up. I really do enjoy the authors writing and am excited to read what she does next. Thank you Berkley and Netgalley for my gifted copy for review.

Far Gone by Danielle Girard – 5 Stars Kylie Milliard is a detective in a small town in North Dakota who met in the first book White Out. I loved that we still get to see the characters in the first book come back in this one. Kylie gets a new case when a set of parents are murdered and their infant daughter goes missing. Lilly, who we met in the first series is still processing and healing after the events of her past, when a piece of evidence shows that Lilly might have a family member she never knew about things get very complicated for her. I love mysteries set in small towns because everyone knows things about the entire town so when secrets are revealed its always a fun reading experience. I do feel like this is a series that would benefit from being read in order because of things that happen to the main characters in book one are still being dealt with in book two. I highly recommend this series if you like thriller/mysteries set in small towns and follows multiple POV’s. Thank you Thomas and Mercer and Netgalley for my gifted copy for review! I can’t wait to read more more in this series!

The Drowning Kind by Jennifer McMahon – 4 Stars This was my first book by this author and now I can not wait to read The Winter People! This book had a creepy atmosphere that I loved so much! The story takes place in dual timelines and in the 1930’s we are following a woman who gets married later in life and desperately wants a child. Hearing about a spring that has healing abilities her and her husband decide to take a mini vacation. In the present a woman learns of her sisters death and must travel back home to find out what happened. I really enjoyed this story and the reveal was really good. Highly recommend if you are looking for a thriller that might have a speculative aspect to it.

Quiet In Her Bones by Nalini Singh – 3.5 Stars I don’t think it is any secret on here how much I love Nalini Singh! SoI really hate to say that I just didn’t love this one. This is her second thriller and I think she does a great job with them, I just couldn’t get into this one like I did her first. That being said this is still a good mystery/thriller and I think people should check it out as most people I know loved it! This one follows Aarav who is the son of Nina Rai who disappeared 10 years earlier without a trace and whose body has just been discovered. Aarav is recuperating from a car accident and back at home with his father and new step-mother when his mother’s remains are found and everyone in the cul-de-sac becomes a suspect. I did really enjoy the mystery in this one and some of the twists were really good, I just personally liked her first thriller better. If you are looking for a good mystery set in New Zealand then I would recommend picking this one up.

The Ex-Talk by Rachel Lynn Solomon – 3 Stars This book was another case of being very hyped and it did not live up to it for me. This story follows Shay who is has worked at the local public radio station for 10 years. When new comer Dominic comes in and starts getting the spotlight Shay instantly takes a dislike to him. When the station decides to change their show line up Shay and Dominic are asked to host a show about relationship while pretending to be ex’s. This book was ok it just didn’t wow me like I was hoping it to. I never really felt the feelings between the two main characters and was underwhelmed with their romance. If you like stories that take place in the world of radio or podcasts then I would think you might like this one.

Reading Round Up: May 11th-20th

Hello friends! I am finally here with my second round up for May! I read a ton of books for this one and it took me awhile to get my thoughts in order. I hope everyone is having a great week so far!

Love For Beginners by Jill Shalvis – 5 Stars This is the 7th book in the Wildstone series and the great thing is that you can read them in any order because the characters do not overlap. In this book we are following Emma who was just released from the hospital after spending 2 months in a coma and then almost a year in recovery relearning how to walk and use her arm. This book gave me all the feels and I binged it so fast! When I first started this book it gave me major How To Walk Away vibes. Both are about a woman recovering from a horrific accident and learning to move on with their new life. So if you liked that book I would highly recommend this one! Both books were 5 Star reads! Thank you William Marrow and Netgalley for my gifted copy for review!

People We Meet On Vacation – 3 Stars I really need to remember that when a “romance” book is so hyped up that there will be a chance that it won’t work for me. Thats what happened with People We Meet On Vacation. Poppy and Alex have been best friends since college and every year the two take a vacation together usually courtesy of Poppy’s job as a travel writer but something happened a few years ago on a trip and now the two don’t talk. The book goes back and forth between past trips and the present day where they are on one last trip together as Poppy tries to salvage their friendship. The dual timelines really took me out of the story and I wished it would have either been told in a linear style or just focus on the present with maybe a few flashbacks to their past. It was still an ok read just not a favorite for me.

One Last Stop by Casey McQuiston – 4 Stars This was such a fun story! I feel like it would be helpful if the synopsis includes that there is a speculative aspect to the book because that might catch people off guard. This story follows August as she settles into her new life in New York. One day she meets Jane on the Q train and from there we spend the rest of the book trying to free Jane from where she is trapped. I really enjoyed most aspects of this book. I loved August and her roommates and friends as they interacted throughout the entire book. They had such a great friend group. What I had a small problem with was the character of Jane. I think because of her situation we never really get to know her so the romance feels very one-sided to me. It was still a fun romance with a hint of other and I enjoyed it. Thank you to St. Martin’s Griffin and Librofm for my gifted audio copy.

A House At The Bottom Of The Lake by Josh Malerman – 2 Stars Short stories are not usually my jam as they never give me enough and this one is the perfect example of that. We are following two teens as they find a secret lake that has a house at the bottom of it and they can actually explore it. This was supposed to be a horror but I never felt creeped out or scared while reading, I just felt frustration. I didn’t get enough context for what was going on or why it had happened.

Lost and Found Sisters by Jill Shalvis – 4 Stars This was a re-read for me and I love Jill’s books so much! They are just the perfect summer beach reads where you know you will get a cute story! This one follows Quinn Walker who is dealing with the loss of her sister and then finds out that she was actually adopted and her birth mother has just passed. Not knowing how to deal with the grief and this surprising news, Quinn heads to the small town of Wildstone to see what her mother has left her. Once there, Quinn discovers a teenaged sister she never knew she had and a cafe that her mother used to run. Quinn also meets Mick who is in town just to help out his mother but the two end up starting something that they were both not really prepared for. I loved this story and the struggle that both sisters had to go through with learning about each other and dealing with their grief. Highly recommend this series if you want some good romance and family stories!

The Mary Shelley Club by Goldy Moldovsky – 4 Stars YA Horror seems to be some of the scariest books I have read, Im not sure what it is but I find some of them super creepy and this one fits the bill. Rachel starts at a new school after overcoming a traumatic incident at her last school. Soon after starting school Rachel joins a group of 4 other students called The Mary Shelley Club. The rules of the club is that none of them talk to each other at school and after hours they meet up and set up fear tests. These tests are designed to make the target scream. I really enjoyed this story and mystery that is going on besides the tests. The ending really left me wanting to know more and I hope this turns into a series so we can get more answers.

Just Last Night by Mhairi McFarlane – 3.5 Stars I think I have said this before but I am not a fan of when a character dies in the middle of the book as a plot device. While technically the death happens before the book starts the way it is written we get a lot of memories in the first part of the person who passes away and this is just not something I like to read about. This story follows four best friends Eve, Justin, Susie and Ed and one night everything in their lives changes. I did really enjoy the writing of this book and I will continue reading from this author, she does such a great job with her characters. We are following Eve as she deals with grief and I thought this was handled very well. There is also a character in this book who has become a new book boyfriend for me! He was so grumpy and I loved it!! If you are looking for an emotional read that leans more towards woman’s fiction than romance then I would recommend picking this one up!

We Met In December by Rosie Curtis – 2 Stars I really don’t like the trope of two people liking each other but spend the entire book pining for one another while dating other people. It feels too close to cheating for me and it’s not something I like to read. Jess follows her dream and finally moves to London and into a house her friend rents out the rooms for. Her first day there she falls for one of her roommates Alex. The two the spend the rest of the book liking each other and spending tons of time together while they are both in other relationships. I only finished this because the writing was good and flowed well.

The Heiress – DNF When I first heard that this book was a reimagining of Anne de Bourgh’s life from Pride and Prejudice I knew I wanted to give it a chance. However, this one just didn’t work for me. I think I would have liked it better if it had started with her as being older but starting with her infancy just didn’t work for me. I liked how the author was trying to give a reason for why Anne was so sickly but I really didn’t like how they did it. Anne was basically fed laudanum since her birth and became a drug addict and I just couldn’t read about that. I also appreciated that the author wrote in a tone similar to Jane Austen but with some more modern themes that were not always talked or written about during that time. Thank you to William Marrow and Netgalley for my gifted copy for review.
