EXCERPT:

It was shit luck I was on shift the day the Texan Royals decided they had a hankering for overcooked fries and burgers so sopping with grease I wouldn’t have fed them to a pig. I was fortunate; I washed dishes, so I wouldn’t meet any of them, not in my worn jeans and flannel shirt. They wouldn’t even know I existed, and I liked it that way.

The rest of the staff faced off against the king and queen of Texas, who were rumored to be volatile on a good day.

I didn’t want to learn what it was like to be struck by lightning. I also didn’t want to find out if they really made low-talent freaks with horse affinities, like me, disappear. My talent had been registered early, at age eight, but it had refused to develop into anything worthwhile, which came as no surprise to me.

My parents couldn’t afford a horse. I couldn’t afford the college I attended, let alone a horse. I’d heard the same story all my life: talents needed to be used to develop.

I wasn’t a null, but I’d never grow beyond my current caste. I could live with that. As long as I didn’t mind washing dishes for the rest of my life, I’d always be able to find a job. If push came to shove, I could join the family trade. Everyone needed a janitor. My mother even enjoyed working as a maid.

She believed a clean home was a happy home.

“Pat,” my boss bellowed.

Jerking my head up, I turned away from my work to face him. “Sir?”

“Take twenty for dinner.”

The next time I searched for work, I’d make certain I got a proper thirty-minute break—and I’d remember to pack my lunch every single day on the off-chance royalty might show up wanting bad food for dinner. With the kitchen already in a state of chaos from the unexpected guests, there’d be no leftovers for the staff, leaving me to make the hike down the street to grab something at the convenience store to take the edge off. For a rare change, I appreciated my high odds of food poisoning.

To dodge the royals, I left out the back door, navigated around the garbage littering the alley, and made my escape to the main street. Two minutes later, I reached my destination.

It, too, had a royal infestation, and the Crowned Heir of Texas glared at a bag of chips. Had I been the subject of her scrutiny, I would’ve run for the hills without looking back. Looking back lost races when every second mattered. In the news, the blonde-haired woman scowled often. I couldn’t tell if the lack of selection or indecisiveness bothered her.

It didn’t matter. A smart man avoided trouble, so I headed for the refrigerated shelves to pick a sandwich and roll the dice. Movement in the corner of my eye startled me from my search.

The Texan princess stalked me, her expression one of unwavering determination. “Excuse me?”

“What ya need?” I blurted, and my face grew hot as my accent betrayed me as someone from a lower caste.

She either didn’t notice or care. “What’s good here?”

I frowned, considering the selection of sandwiches. To my dismay, only one lacked eggs or mayonnaise, the top culprits of unexpected digestive distress following the poor choice of acquiring dinner from a convenience store. I grabbed the pulled pork sandwich from the shelf and offered it to her. “If by good you mean edible, your best bet is to take one labelled as made today and hope for the best. This is the one you want.”

I picked the second-best option, and while labelled as from today, it doubled down on the eggs and mayo with some cheese and questionable chunks of chicken. By the end of my shift, I’d regret having eaten anything. I nodded in an effort to be polite and fled while I could. To escape faster, I left the cashier my change to avoid humiliating myself in front of Princess Jessica Dunhaven, the future queen of Texas.

EXCERPT:

Dying wasn’t on Red’s to-do list that day.

At least, not at the top of her list.

If she had been asked if she wanted to die the week before, it might’ve been a different story. Of course, then she had just been pulled from a competition due to an “incident” and banned from the U.S.A. Climbing Team for the next six months. “Breathe and get some perspective,” Coach had said.

It was the only competition in which she hadn’t taken first place in the last five years.

It had been the end of her world.

Until now.

Red stared up at the towering pines and tried to ignore the piece of rock protruding from her chest. She should have been panicking. It would have been the appropriate reaction to falling off a cliff and landing on a series of sharp pieces of granite, but she was strangely calm. She didn’t feel any pain. Probably because it was a mortal wound—it was the deadly ones you didn’t feel.

She shouldn’t have been out there climbing alone. Coach had strictly forbidden it when she left their motel room that morning. It wasn’t like he was her dad telling her what to do, he was just looking out for her. He was four years her senior and they had been dating for the past year. It was convenient since they were on the road together twenty-four seven. A coach with benefits.

Red hiccupped, swallowing a hysterical laugh.

If she had her phone, she would send the climbing world one last message. It’d definitely make national news. Seventeen-year-old world-class climber, Megan “Red” Tucker dies alone in a freak accident. Reports say that she reached out to her fans just before death advising them to never climb alone and to always be prepared. She could hear the talk now:

At least she died doing what she loved.

She wouldn’t have wanted it any other way.

A year before nationals. What a shame.

Red shook the thoughts away. Maybe the wound wasn’t that bad. Maybe the rock hadn’t hit any major organs. She squinted down at the jagged entity sticking up through her purple tank top, the blood around it blending into the deep hue.

Okay, maybe she was panicking.

Goodreads / Amazon / Barnes & Noble / iBooks / Kobo / Google Play

EXCERPT:

We drove along a dark road that night. Flanked by cars that slowly but surely fell behind, I watched the vehicles traveling alongside us disappear as we advanced out of the city limits and onto the lost stretches taken only by farmers and their equipment. Beside me, Brad drove with the window down, one arm braced along the frame, his free hand around the wheel. He drove without a care in the world, humming softly to Top 100 on the radio; and I, left only to observe, watched the fields before us extend forever into the distance.

“This is nice,” Brad said, tossing his fringe away from his eyes, “isn’t it?”

“Yeah,” I replied. “It is.”

His hair—which was lengthier on the top but shorn along the sides of his head—blew haphazardly in the wind, creating the impression that we were two kids doing nothing more than enjoying the world for what it was. He was twenty-one, I eighteen, fresh and new and completely and utterly enamored. I tried my hardest not to watch him out of my peripheral, but found myself doing that regardless.

Remember, remember, the code to remember, I thought. Straight men get a pass because their love doesn’t last.

Of course it didn’t. That was why it was stupid for me to even consider that this was anything more than just a casual outing. Besides—if anyone was going to make the first move, if they even were, it would be him.

Which wasn’t going to happen.

I drew in a long breath of the cool night air and smiled as the scent of grass and wildflowers entered my nose.

“They have much of this up in Utah?” Brad asked.

“I lived at the edge of Salt Lake,” I replied, “so it was mostly lots of flatland, mostly farms.”

“There’s a lot of that here. But this—this is absolutely beautiful.” Brad smiled as he turned his high beams on. “Do you see?”

The world bloomed before me. Wild, untamed, uninhibited—the grass extended on both sides of the road and was marked only by the separation of land with wooden fences and wire. Flowers dotted the area at various intervals, creating the impression that this place, though encroached upon by humanity, was untouched. It was utterly magical, in a sense—and, in a way, haunting.

So far out, there were no lights to be seen; and with no traffic behind us, it was dark as it could.

Normally, I wasn’t afraid of the night. Something, however, gave me cause for concern.

But what was it?

Was it the belief that we would simply pull over alongside the road and stop? Was it the fact that we could get stranded out here and not be found for hours? What, exactly, was it?

I brushed the thought off as I considered it and cleared my throat as Brad continued to drive.

“Something up?” he asked.

“I… just realized that I haven’t asked you about your art.”

“Oh. That.” Brad laughed. “No need to worry. It’s not like we’ve exchanged notes or anything like that.”

“Still,” I said. “I’d like to see some of it sometime.”

“My phone’s in the back seat if you want to reach back and grab it.”

“You have it on your phone?”

“All my stuff’s digital, and the files are in the cloud. Go ahead—grab it.”

I twisted around, quickly located his phone, then loosened the seatbelt around my waist before leaning back and clawing at his phone.

“What’s your PIN?” I asked, lowering my head and tilting the phone at an angle to avoid blindsiding him.

“0434,” he replied.

I started typing the numbers in.

Brad inhaled.

I looked up.

He asked, “What the hell is that?”

And I paled.

Hovering alongside the road was what I at first assumed to be the rear lights of a car. The only problem was: they were too small to be from a car, and lower to the ground. And worst yet, they were moving.

“What in the world…” I started to say.

Brad pressed his foot down on the accelerator.

The headlights shifted.

A brief glimpse of fur could be seen.

Then whatever it was lunged for the car.

Brad jerked the wheel.

We swerved to the left.

He corrected.

We centered along the middle of the lane.

“What the fuck was that?” I asked.

“I don’t know,” Brad replied, “I—”

He paused.

“What?” I asked, turning my head to face him. “Brad, why are you—”

“Look behind us,” he said.

I did.

And saw that the red lights were moving—directly behind us.

“It’s just the light reflecting off its eyes,” I said as Brad slowly began to accelerate the car. “Slow down, Brad. Everything’s going to be fine.”

“It’s chasing us,” he said. “It’s fucking chasing us.”

“Yeah it is. But we’re going to outrun it. We—”

Brad increased his speed.

The car continued to accelerate.

The lights—or, more aptly, eyes—continued to pursue.

But what was even more haunting was that they weren’t slowing down.

No.

They were speeding up.

A low, trembling breath escaped me; and Brad, seemingly aware of this, pressed his foot even harder on the accelerator. Even as the car began to pick up speed, and the wind whipped through the open window, the figure kept pace—and I, so enraptured by its presence, could only watch as it continued to pick up speed.

“It’s following,” I said. “It’s following us, Brad.”

“It’s fucking chasing us!” the man yelled. “The goddamn thing is fucking chasing us!”

“Go faster! Faster!”

“I’m trying!” Brad screamed. “I’m fucking trying, Dean!”

I twisted my head back toward the window.

Saw that it was moving toward my side of the vehicle.

Saw that it was attempting to come up alongside us.

Brad, hysterically laughing—or, I should say, crying—at this point, refused to turn his gaze to the side as the figure continued to pick up speed.

“Faster!” I said. “FASTER!”

He slammed his foot on the accelerator.

We went sailing forward.

The speedometer passed sixty…

Seventy…

Eighty…

Ninety.

When we coasted one-hundred, I thought for sure that he was going to lose control and crash. But somehow, someway, he didn’t. He was able to maintain control of the vehicle.

“We’re coming up on a curve,” I said. “Brad! Brad!”

“I see it!” he cried. “I see the damn thing!”

“Slow down!”

“We can’t!”

“Why?”

“It—”

I refused to turn my head, but apparently, he could still see it, because he continued to accelerate to a speed we shouldn’t have been going regardless of whatever was chasing us.

We came along the curve.

He began to slow.

Then, suddenly, he lost control.

Somehow, we didn’t flip. Instead, we began to spin at an alarming rate: once, twice, a third time, then a fourth. When the fifth and sixth revolutions took place, I opened my eyes, and saw a flash of red before them.

“Brad!” I cried. “Brad!”

Something grabbed me.

I screamed.

He screamed.

The car spun three more times, then came to a stop.

Head spinning, stomach lurching, I opened my eyes to find that there was absolutely nothing to be seen.

Whatever was chasing us was gone.

“Buh… Brad?” I asked, trembling. “Are you all right?”

“I’m okay,” he said. “I’m… I’m fine.”

“What the hell just happened?”

“I don’t know, Dean. I… I don’t know.”

EXCERPT:

As Clarke wended down rocky terrain, the snow melted and revealed fresh dirt and abundant nature. The more they descended, the grumpier she got. Something shifted inside when she saw how the world had changed because of the way she’d lived her old life. Death had been on one side of the mountain and life on the other. Even though she’d had a part, she didn’t want to be lumped in with humans who’d intentionally destroyed the world.

The fae’s words came back to her. We dont choose the rules of life, but if we dont follow them, were destined for nothing.”

“You know,” she said as she dodged a divot in the path. “We’ve been walking for hours and you still haven’t told me your name.”

She was also tired, itchy, and hungry.

The fae nudged her between the shoulder blades. She almost lost her footing.

He may have a giant sword, scary mother-fucking teeth, and a powerful body she was sure could snap her in two, but her instinct just wasn’t feeling the fear. He had the ability to control her words and her actions, yet he’d only just used the power. She rounded on him.

“Take these off me,” she demanded. “Free me.”

He looked down his nose and flicked his gaze to the restraints. Her breath stuck in her throat and, for a moment, she thought her instincts needed a serious talking to. But then he moved toward her. Fast.

With a speed that left her breathless, and a flick of his powerful hand, his bone knife sliced through her restraints. Clarke’s fists dropped to her sides.

He leaned forward, his menacing presence only inches from her face. And then he sniffed, nostrils flaring as he trailed his nose along her cheek, jaw and neck. Where he stayed. Hot air puffed out as he exhaled, and goosebumps erupted over her flesh. The tattoo under his eye flared, casting an eerie blue glow as he bared sharp teeth and bit the air, snapping with an audible click.

Clarke squeaked. A tremble of fear skated up her spine.

He raised a brow. “It matters not if you are free. You will not run.”

“And why not? Because you’ll compel me to stay?”

“Because, woman,” he growled, mouth curving into a wild, wicked grin, “I am the reason for those goosebumps on your skin. I am the reason children have nightmares, and in there”—he pointed into the shadowed woods only a few hundred feet away—“there are far worse things than nightmares. I am the reason you will live to breathe another day.”

“So I need a monster to fight a monster, is that it?”

Stupid woman. Stop provoking the beast.

His eyes narrowed and held her gaze.

An unearthly howl came from deep within the woods. At least, Clarke thought it was a howl. It could be any manner of creature in this foreign place. His pet wolf stiffened and raised his hackles.

Watching the woods, the fae stilled in a way that was wholly inhuman. He reached for his sword. Fingers locked tight around the hilt. Knuckles whitened. His ears pricked up straight.

Leaves rustled and trees whispered that night was falling. Then the tension left his shoulders and he let go of the sword. He tossed a self-righteous look at her, and then swaggered away, continuing toward the very forest that had caused him concern only moments before.

Goddamn it. She wanted to stomp her feet.

Smug, smug bastard.

She should leave just to spite him. But where would she go? To the human city that brutalized fae and animals through a barbed wire ceiling? The one the source of her dread came from? No thanks. She had to face facts. She was in a strange place and on her own. There were dangers out there in the night, and her gut said to go with the fae. He had the upper hand.

She hurried to catch up, for she knew something he didn’t. She could make friends with nightmares. She’d had practice.

Adèle Villeneuve is attempting the impossible. At twenty-four she’s opened an events company in her small French village, which at last count has a population of 1501. Even her parents tried to stop her. But Adèle has a plan. Or, at least she did.

Then the Reniers returned to town.

Aside from the dilapidated chateau that’s sat in ruin for the past forty years, Saint-Germain is known for one other thing: a bitter feud between the Reniers and the Villeneuves that has gone on for so long no one remembers how it started. It’s practically folklore, a hatred so deep it ended with the Reniers leaving France back in the eighties, never to be seen or heard from again.

Until now.

With the feud reignited, Adèle’s quiet life is upended. Even more so when she finds out that the Reniers are not only refurbishing the chateau but also opening a competing events company. When Finn Renier, the alluring son of her father’s enemy, offers her a truce that could save her business, she makes a decision that goes against her family, a choice that changes everything.

As she finds herself falling for the one person she’s not supposed to, secrets and lies become entangled, a dangerous truth threatening to be revealed.

Because Finn isn’t all that he seems.

And the Reniers didn’t just return to Saint-Germain for a fresh start.

EXCERPT:

“How about a drink?”

I stare at him, certain that he’s joking. “A drink?”

“Yeah.”

He says it with such confidence. I can’t imagine what it’s like to walk around with that level of self-assurance. “I can’t have a drink with you.”

“Why not? You did last Friday.”

“You showed up at my table. Uninvited, I might add. And that was in Laval. My papa’s office is right over there and he would disown me if he saw me speaking with you, let alone having a drink with you.”

He watches me closely. “Do you always do what your dad wants?”

“No.” The moment I say it I have my doubts.

“So, have a drink with me.”

“Sure,” I say sarcastically. “We’ll go into the café where Gloria’s only known me all my life. I’m sure she won’t tell Papa.”

A subtle hint of annoyance crosses those cover model features of his. “Are you serious about not being seen in public with me?”

“Are you serious in not realizing why?” I glance around, worried that we’ve been talking too long. Saint-Germain’s gossips have eyes everywhere.

“Adèle, it’s just a drink. I’m not asking you to marry me.”

My mind conjures up an image of him in a suit, standing at an altar, watching me, teary-eyed as I walk down the aisle. Appalled at my disturbing, traitorous thoughts, I get to the point. “Our families are at war.”

“Should I be sharpening my sword?” he asks. “Or will it be pistols at dawn?”

Both those words are far too phallic for my liking. “Surely you have something better to do, like repair your dilapidated château so you can put me out of business.”

“The workers start next week.”

“Well…” I have no comeback to that.

“If you won’t drink with me, will you at least take a walk with me?”

“Why?” I ask, confused.

“Because I’m new to town. Aren’t you supposed to be friendly to newcomers?”

“There are plenty of other people you could ask,” I tell him.

He chuckles at that. “As far as I can see, there are two other people my age in Saint-Germain. You and your cousin.”

“Then ask her,” I say.

“I’m asking you.”

My heart does an unmistakeable flutter, proving itself to be as traitorous as my thoughts. I realize I need to be blunt. “The only way you could ever get me to drink with you is if it was to toast your family’s departure from Saint-Germain.”

He moves even closer. “We’re not going anywhere.”

“Then I suppose you’ll have to get used to drinking alone.”

The air between us thickens, his eyes glancing at my lips. For a fleeting second I think he might kiss me. For a horrifying moment, I think I want him to. But then it passes, like temporary psychosis. Still, a worrying realization persists.

I cannot trust myself around Finn Renier.

Reading Round Up: May 16-31

Hello Book Friends! Here are the last 5 books I read in May. Hopefully I can get my May Stats up before my first June round up but not sure that will happen.

Almost Just Friends by Jill Shalvis – 4 Stars In this story we follow Piper who after raising her two younger siblings is finally ready to restart her life. She almost has enough money to go to school in Colorado to be a nurse. After years of being an EMT she is ready for this, however her siblings both decide to move back home at the same time interrupting Piper’s plans. As with most of her books, this is more than just a romance, it’s about learning to forgive yourself and those around you. It’s about family at its core. Another great read I would highly recommend, maybe by a pool with a fun drink in your hand.

The Trouble With Hating You by Sajni Patel – 5 Stars  I would give this one all the stars if I could. Sometimes a book is just what you need in that moment and this was mine! I had just dnf’d a book and then finished one that was meh so I picked this one hoping it would be better. It was!!!! I loved the main character and how she wasn’t afraid to be herself even when her upbringing was saying to be something else. Her friends loved her and even though they all did things differently the love and support was amazing!! I love a good hate to love and this one was great!! Highly recommend.

The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek by Kim Michele Richardson – 3 Stars Earlier this year I read The Giver of Stars by Jojo Moyes and really enjoyed it. There is some controversy surrounding these two books but I am not going to get into that here. At the center the stories were similar, about the packhorse librarians in Kentucky in the 1930’s and 40’s. To me that was where the similarities ended, this story added another element by introducing up to the blue people of Kentucky. I really enjoyed this aspect of the story because it gave me something new to research about. My main compliant with this one is that I wish there was more interaction between the main character and some of the side characters, because there wasn’t as much some of the ending was hard to take. I also wanted a ton more from the ending, it left me with so many questions! Overall still a fun read and am glad to have read more on this subject!

Camp by L.C. Rosen – 4 Stars In Camp we are following a group of teens who every summer go to Camp Outland, a camp for kids who are LGBTQ+. This is Randy’s 4th year and this summer he is determined to win over Hudson and not just be one of his conquests. To do this he changes his name to Del and hangs out with the more masculine crowd instead of his theater group. What follows is not only making Hudson fall in love him but also a discovery of himself. Randy learns that he does like sports and being a leader but also loves acting and theater. This was a really cute story about learning to accept you and your peers for who they are and not who you think they should be. Randy’s family is very accepting of him and who he is while Hudson’s family is not. Hudson’s family thinks he should be normal and to fall into stereotypes. At times I struggled with Randy because he was changing himself so much for someone who didn’t know all of him and kept ditching his friends for Hudson but in the end it all worked out. I also really enjoyed the theater aspect of this book, every summer they do a musical but cast based on skill and not gender. I would have loved to see their version of Bye Bye Birdie where he was more of a Ziggy Stardust character! Overall this was a fun book and gave it 4 stars. Thank you Netgalley, Fantastic Flying BookClub and Little Brown Books for my copy in exchange for my review.

The Summer Deal by Jill Shalvis – 5 Stars Here we follow Brynn and Kinsey who used to go to summer camp together when they were younger but never liked each other. Years later they are once again thrown together but this time there is much more going on. Enter Eli who is Kinsey’s best friend but has a thing for Brynn. I really loved this one like I have all the others by her. I loved Kinsey’s character and her harsh self defense mechanism and her relationship with Deck! This story tackles family in all forms and battling illness. Such a great read, highly recommend!

Book Blitz: Walk The Dog by Isabel Jolie

Walk the Dog
Isabel Jolie
Publication date: June 8th 2020
Genres: Adult, Contemporary, Romance

A steamy, fun single dad stand-alone romance set in New York City and New Orleans.

Delilah Daniels

Temporary. That’s my life in New York. Eventually, I’ll have to move back home to New Orleans. In the meantime, I’m all about enjoying these years.

Against my better judgment, I agree to dogsit for my friend. As I feared, it does not go well. As a matter of fact, it goes so poorly we end up at the vet- the dog’s fault, not mine.

On the bright side, Dr. Herriot could star in his own veterinary reality TV show, if there is such a thing. The man is sex in scrubs.

Mason Herriot might just become the highlight of my year. As it turns out, not only is he single, but he also needs some fun in his overworked life. And fun? That I can do.

Mason Herriot

My daughter is my world. The fledgling veterinary practice is my career and my passion. As a single dad, I couldn’t balance both without help from others. Some days, it doesn’t feel like I’m balancing anything at all.

Delilah Daniels walks into the clinic on one of those days. My partners are out with the flu, and I, once again, am stuck at work.

I can’t even explain why I ask her out. It’s spontaneous. There’s an energy to her. A zest for life. And there’s something about how she cares for her friend’s dog.

We aim for casual. I may be a single dad, but I’m not blind. Delilah packs some curves and it proves hard to keep those dates family-friendly.

In a nanosecond, casual loses all appeal. We can make this work. If I can convince Delilah her home’s no longer in the Big Easy…

EXCERPT:

Less than two steps into the great room, I halt. On every single wall, pieces of paper are taped. For a minute, I’m unsure, but no, it’s most definitely children’s art. Some of the paper bears the marks of age, faded colors, and dust. Those are mostly comprised of lines and scribbles. Some of the fresher papers include torn-out pages from coloring books, carefully drawn in the lines. A few are colorful paintings in the abstract. Handprints and footprints. Others landscape and animal drawings. Many cat and dog line sketches. I point at the paintings and grin. “Do your kid owners send you artwork?”

He slips both hands into his front pockets and closes one eye, as if he’s thinking about my question. “Kid owners? You mean my patients’ owners?”

“Yeah.” There’s a ton of art here. He must have been collecting these for years.

“No. My daughter is a budding artist. These are all hers.”

Jesus, Mother, Mary, and Angels. I did not expect that. A single dad. I’ve never done that before. Dated a parent. People with kids usually seem so different.

His shoe taps mine. “You can close your mouth.”

“Oh, no, I ah—”

“I should’ve said something yesterday, but I didn’t really know how to bring it up. I haven’t dated, or tried to date, since she was born. If it’s an issue for you, we can just be friends. Really. I’ve got a great vegetarian lasagna in the oven and a huge kale salad, so I hope you’ll still stay for dinner. An adult dinner without a child at the table is a rarity for me.”

As he’s talking, I twist around, studying all the art, wishing my brain would catch up. This is fine. What does it matter if he has a daughter? I’ll probably never meet her. I mean, isn’t that kind of a rule among single parents? You don’t introduce dates until you’re serious? And I’m gonna be moving. I don’t do serious. But wait…

“Are you single?”

He exhales, and it sounds like a mixture of a laugh and relief. “Yes. Never been married, actually. Kara lives with me. Her mom’s in a band and isn’t around. Or…she hasn’t been.” He calls as he heads to a hall at the end of the room, “Can I get you something to drink? Wine? Water?”

“Wine, please.” Yes, this situation calls for alcoholic reinforcement.

SNEAK PEEKS:

“The Billionaire’s Nanny” by Laura Burton

Benjamin’s smile turned to a look of horror as she waved her phone at him.

“I’ve followed you on Instagram.”

Benjamin dragged a hand through his messy hair and looked away with a sheepish smile.

“Ah. You found me, then.” He stooped down and picked Maggie up in his arms. She cuddled into him, wrapping her arms around his neck.

“Benjy,” she said in a baby voice. The sight made Krista melt inside.

“You were right. You are fun.”

And insanely sexy, she added silently with a smirk.

“Well, you might notice I haven’t posted for a month,” he pointed at her phone as he bobbed Maggie up and down. Krista got to her feet and patted the sand off her legs.

“Well, I’m sure your 1.2 million followers miss you. Let me take a picture of you with Maggie.”

Krista positioned her phone up to capture a picture of Benjamin stooping his head low against Maggie’s brow. She looked up at him with big eyes and her hand touched his cheek. The two of them were perfectly framed by the sunset and glowed dark against the ocean.

“Your followers will die when they see this.”

“My Real Life Time Out” by Rimmy London

“The way you navigate the world around you—the way you care for it. There’s something so genuine about you that makes me want to be more. I love being around you. Everything about you.”

He paused to take a shaky breath. “I just wanted to tell you now instead of pretending I didn’t feel anything…because I do.”

His gaze was tentative, vulnerable and so unusually insecure. He’d said the perfect words, all smothered in simmering glances like butter.

“I Never Told You” by Jessie Cal

Jess finally shoved the last piece of her s’more into her mouth. “I think it’s time to call it a night,” she said with her mouth full, and his heart ached a bit. Thoughts of holding her in his arms and watching the night sky flooded his mind, and he shook his head like shaking off a spell.

“Do you need help getting Bill’s grandkids in the tent?” he offered, standing with her.

“That would be great.” She squeezed his arm as a thankful gesture, and he forced himself to ignore the electricity that came with her touch. “If you can carry Zach, I’ll pick up little Cole.”

Even in the way she dragged her feet, he could tell she was tired. His mind suddenly conjured an image of him pulling her into a comforting embrace, but he pushed it aside.

After laying the last boy down inside the tent, he stepped out only to find himself standing in front of her again.

“Thank you.” She let out a tired sigh. “You must be exhausted.”

“I enjoyed every minute of it, though,” he said, flashing her a soft smile. “Minus the shark incident, of course.”

She blurted out a laugh then covered her mouth so as not to wake the kids. “Really? Cause that was the highlight of my day.”

“You’re mean.”

She stifled another laugh. “Good night, Logan.” She leaned in and wrapped him in a hug. Her hair smelled like salt water which was oddly comforting. When she pulled back, he grabbed her hand. He had no idea why, or what he would say. And she was looking at him, waiting for an explanation, but he didn’t have one. He simply wanted to hold her hand.

No, that wasn’t true. That wasn’t all he wanted.

He opened his mouth to speak, to tell her about all the crazy flutters he’d been feeling in the pit of his stomach all night, but then she looked down at their fingers laced together, and he no longer knew what to say. What was she thinking? Did she like the way it felt as much as he did? Should he just pull her into his arms and kiss her?

“I think being on this island is messing with our heads,” she whispered, slipping her hand out of his and pulling away. “Good night, Logan.”

And there was his heart again, racing at the sound of her saying his name. “Good night, Jess.”

Reading Round Up: May 1-15

Hello Book Friends! How was everyone’s May? Sorry this is so late! I decided to take a few weeks off of social media so I haven’t posted anything on my blog or instagram. I read 10 books and had 2 DNF’s. Here are the 5 I read in the first half of the month. Keep reading to see my thoughts!

Bad Day For Sunshine by Darynda Jones – 5 Stars I really loved this book from the beginning! It follows Sunshine, the newly elected Sheriff for Del Sol, New Mexico, only one small catch is they she didn’t know she was in the running. Sunshine returns back to her home after having left years prior after an accident left her injured both physically and emotionally. I loved Sunshine and her daughter and the town’s cast of quirky characters. I can’t wait to see where the next book takes us!

The Sweeney Sisters by Lian Dolan – 4 Stars William Sweeney was a famous author and when he died he not only left his three daughters a memoir to find but also a surprise sister. We follow the three Sweeney sisters as they come to turns on who their famous father was, changes in their personal lives and a new addition to the family. This book started off pretty slow and I had a hard time getting into the story.  It was probably at least halfway thru that I started to actually like any of the main characters and want to know how their story ends.

The oldest sister Liza was a typical mom for their neighborhood. Her kids were in all the right clubs and programs, she was a dutiful wife to her successful husband and she even owned her own art gallery. She is the sister who holds it all together and makes sure everyone is doing what they are supposed too. The middle sister Maggie is the artist and she is very selfish.  I never liked her throughout the book and even though she has some growth in the end she was not redeemed in my eyes. She was cruel to her sisters and was only looking out for her self. The youngest sister Tricia at first appeared to be a very cold and distant sister but as the story goes on she became my favorite.  She is a lawyer in Manhattan and very good at her job. I loved her story arc and Raj!! The fourth sister who is actually the oldest is Serena Tucker, she is a journalist and grew up next door to the sisters. I enjoyed how the four ended up rallying around each other and supporting one another. Sister’s are not always easy to get along with and this book showed that but in the end they all loved and supported each other. Overall I really enjoyed this book. I thought the author did a great job of bringing you into the family and getting you to feel the emotions of all the characters. This would be a fun summer read, its not too hard hitting and the setting of being in Connecticut in the summer was perfect! Thank you Netgalley, Harper Collins, Goodreads and the Fantastic Flying Bookclub for my copies!

Starlight on Willow Lake by Susan Wiggs – 4 Stars

This was my first book by Susan Wiggs and it won’t be my last! I randomly picked this one up from my little free library because of the cover. This story follows Faith who is a widow with 2 children who is barely making ends meet. She ends up taking a job taking care of a woman who after an accident became a qiuadralpalegic. We not only follow Faith and her children but her client and her family is well. I really enjoyed this story, it had romance but at its core was just a great family story about growth.

The Lost and Found Bookshop by Susan Wiggs – 4 Stars This was my second book by this author and I greatly enjoyed it. This is the story of Natalie who looses her mother in a tragic accident and takes over the family bookstore in San Fransisco. Natalie has just been given a promotion at her job up in Sonoma that she doesn’t really like so she decides to quit her job so she can move back to the bookstore where she grew up to take care of her grandfather. When she gets there she finds out that the store is so far behind in bills that there is not a lot she can do to save it. She also finds out that her grandfathers health is getting worse. There is so much more to this story than just Natalie trying to save the bookstore, there is so much history. I love learning knew things in books and then researching it so I can know more. There was also a lot of family history too, Natalies mother and grandfather were researching their family history that have lived in that building for three generations. I highly recommend this book if you are looking for a sweet family book that also has a little history and romance and its set in a bookstore. Thank you Netgalley, Harper Collins and William Morrow for advance copy, all opinions are my own.

Rainy Day Friends by Jill Shalvis – 5 Stars This was my first book by Jill Shalvis and I absolutely loved it. I read 2 more by her before the month was over. Lanie is a recent widow who found out after his death that he had left several other woman grieving with his passing. Needing a change of pace Lanie takes a job at a family run winery in Sanoma California. Lanie not only falls for the handsome single dad but also his entire family. This one was so cute and fun, highly recommend for a vacation or beach read.

Until Next Time, Happy Reading!
