Reading Round Up: October Part 2

Hello friends! Here is my last round up for October! I feel very proud that we are only a little over halfway through November and I already have this posted! Yay Me! Sorry a few of these are a little short, I find it hard to say things about books sometimes, especially when they are hard to talk about. Have you read any of these? I would love to hear your thoughts on them!

After The Forest by Kell Woods – 4 Stars This book took me a long time to read not only because I was reading a physical book but also because this was just a slow fantasy. This is kind of a retelling of Hansel and Gretel but follows them when they are adults with a few other folk tales thrown in as well. I really enjoyed this story and recommend picking it up if you are a fan of retellings.

The Unfortunate Side Effects of Heartbreak and Magic by Breanne Randall – 3 Stars I was in the mood for some witchy books this month so I picked up this one from Book oF The Month, it was recommended for fans of Gilmore Girls and Practical Magic. While it had elements of those overall it was just kind of a blah story. It follows our main character Sadie who learned at a young age that after she has 4 heartbreaks she will lose her magic. At the beginning of this story Sadie has had 2 and on her way to a third so she is really closed off and not letting people in. I liked the magic in this book but Sadie really bothered me and she felt very immature. I might pick up more from this author as this was a debut but it depends on the subject of any future books.

The Predictable Heartbreaks of Imogen Finch by Jacqueline Firkins – 3 Stars Ok so I read this one just a couple of weeks ago and already forgot what it was about, I guess a 3 is pretty spot on for that. Imogen has recently been dumped but as with all her relationships it’s not really a surprise. She has known from a young age that she will never be anybody’s first and lives this each time she is broken up with for another woman. Things begin to change as her childhood best friend comes back to town and they pick up their friendship like he never left. Imogen must learn that maybe she never put her self first so how can others put her there as well. I felt this one was more woman’s fiction than romance and I think thats where I struggled with it. I do really enjoy this authors writing so I will be picking up books by them in the future, this one just fell a bit flat for me. Thank you St. Martin’s Press for my gifted copy for review.

Spell The Month In Books – November

N – Night Broken by Patricia Briggs

O – Once Burned by Jeaniene Frost

V – Vampire Interrupted by Lynsay Sands

E – Emerald Blaze by Ilona Andrews

M – Magic Strikes by Ilona Andrews

B – Breaking Badger by Shelle Laurenston

E – Eternal Kiss Of Darkness by Jeaniene Frost

R – Resonance Surge by Nalini Singh

Reading Round Up: October Part 1

My Roommate Is A Vampire by Jenna Levine – 3 Stars This was a fun romance that I feel like didn’t take it’s self too seriously. It follows Cassie who is about to be evicted from her apartment and answers an ad for a roommate in a very nice part of town for little to no money. Turns out her roommate is a little different and might just be a vampire. Overall this was fun but I felt it was missing a little something which is why I can’t give it a higher rating.

The Love Interest by Clare Gilmore – 4 Stars  I really enjoyed this enemies to lovers work place romance! This follows Casey who is a finance wiz and is upset when she gets passed up for a job by someone from the outside. Turns out Alex, the new hire is very qualified and Casey begrudgingly starts to appreciate what he brings to the table. As Casey and Alex work more closely together on a new project things start to heat up between them. Both Casey and Alex had flaws but were trying to over come them and I really enjoyed that part of the story. I highly recommend picking this one up! Plus it takes place in the fall and over the holidays!! Thank you @smpromance for my #gifted copy for review!!

The Unmaking of June Farrow by Adrienne Young – 4.5 Stars I am a huge fan of Adrienne Young and think all of her books are wonderful and her newest is no exception! I love the mix of magic and how it’s not really explained it’s just part of their lives and the story. This one follows a family of women who are cursed and will eventually lose their minds. I love this author’s writing, it feels very immersive and vivid. I also find her stories unique and can’t wait to read her next book whether that is YA or adult.

Reading Round Up: September Part 2

Hi Friends! I am a little later than I wanted to be with this one but here is my last round up for September! I really enjoyed all 3 of these books and they were all so different!

She Started It by Sian Gilbert – 4 Stars She Started It follows a group of woman who go to a secluded island for a hen do but not everything is as it seems. This is a book where you are just waiting for them all to die!

A Lady’s Guide to Scandal by Sophie Irwin – 4 Stars Normally I am not a fan of love triangles but I will say that this one worked pretty well for me! Eliza is recently widowed and still in mourning when her late husband’s heir (who happens to be Eliza’s first love) returns home to take over his property. Not wanting to return home to her overbearing family Eliza decides to head to bath for her “health”. While there she befriends Duke Melville who does not have the best reputation. This book was so fun and I am glad that I finally got to it. I also liked that this book addressed race as Melville is of Indian descent and this is a part of his character development. If you are a fa of historicals then I recommend picking this one. Thank you @penguinbooks for my gifted copy!

The Rom-Con by Devon Daniels – 4 Stars This book reminded me of one of my favorite romcoms, How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days. We are following Cassidy who works for a woman’s magazine and gets the idea to use an article from the 1950’s about how to get a man. At a party one she decides to use a tactic but it backfires and instead ends up talking with Jack who works at their magazine rival. I really enjoyed this one, the writing was great and I was in it from the beginning. I love when a book is a true romcom and makes me laugh a bunch which this one did. I was part of a traveling arc for this one and enjoyed seeing everyone’s highlights and markings. Thank you Berkley Romance and my traveling arc friends for the gifted copy!
