Excerpt

River

“Why is the elevator so slow?” she mutters.

“Tell me three things you’re grateful for,” I say.

She does a double take. “Is this where I’m like your…pet project? Don’t feel sorry for me.”

Rainbow, sorry is the last thing I feel for you.

I want you under me.

Deep and hard.

“How are things with Donovan?” I ask.

Her throat bobs. “I-I can’t talk to you about him. I mean, yeah, um, it…doesn’t feel right, you know, to him.”

Right. He’s her boyfriend and my frat brother.

The door opens and she slips out, her arm brushing against my chest. I follow, sucking down the electricity between us.

She blows out a breath. “I know what this is, why you’re being nice to me—”

“Yeah? Tell me, because I can’t figure it out,” I snap, annoyed she won’t open up while the other side is pissed at myself for asking. “Trust me, I wish I didn’t…” I stop, my jaw clenching.

She stops at the door to class and faces me. “Your paper. I’m sorry I can’t help you, I really am. I love helping others, but I don’t think it’s a good idea for us…” She bites her lip, her gaze avoiding mine. “There’s something about you and me—” She halts and looks down at her feet. “Anyway, I know a few students who tutor athletes. Let me give you their names—”

“No one but you, Anastasia.”

“What? Why?”

Instinct takes over and I back her against the wall, towering over her. I tilt her chin up, and she doesn’t speak or move, just breathing fast, as my hand slides around to her nape. A hum of heat goes through my body as my hands tangle in her hair.

“River…what…” Pink rises on her cheeks as her lashes flutter.

Every time, I’m pushing a little more, the dark side of me winning. Monday. Her apartment. Now.

I could kiss her right now, but it’s wrong, immensely, and I’m being bad, so bad…

She gazes up at me, her eyes flaring, the gold around her pupils darkening. She swallows as goose bumps appear on her neck.

A primal sound builds in my throat.

Anger.

Frustration.

Loyalty.

Dammit. I shouldn’t be this close, shouldn’t touch her—

“I’ll wait.” I grind my teeth and step back.

Her lips part, a small puff of air coming out. She looks at my mouth. “For what?”

The lethal side of me, the one itching to play this game no matter the consequences, tries to take over and speak the truth. I shove it down.

You, I say in my head.

Leaving her there, I sweep past her and go to my seat.

Five fucking rows back.

THE RELATIONSHIP PACT by Adriana Locke
Release Date: December 17th

Synopsis
How hard can it be?

That was the question rolling around Larissa Mason’s mind just before she asked Hollis Hudson to be her fake boyfriend.

It was only supposed to be for five minutes, after all.

Granted, that was also before she felt his hand on the small of her back as he charmed the heck out of her family.

She hadn’t heard his laugh yet either.

And it was definitely before she saw the football god shirtless. Otherwise, she would’ve had an idea of just how hard some things could be.

It turns out that pretending to be in love with a crazily handsome, somewhat enigmatic, and absolutely unforgettable tight end (that has an amazing tight end) is easy.

Reminding herself that just because opposites attract doesn’t mean they’re forever is much harder.

What they have isn’t love—it’s a relationship pact. Right?

My Thoughts

Sports Romances is one of my favorite sub-genres! This is the story of River who has been crushing on one of his frat brother’s girlfriend since before they got together but would never do anything to hurt his “brother”. After a really bad week Anastasia ends up breaking up with her boyfriend and ends up turning to River for comfort. I really enjoyed the story of Anastasia and River and the struggle they went through when dealing with their feelings. One of my only problems with the story is they would mention a few character traits multiple times for River but they were not explained well with why he did those. River was a fun character to get to know and I really liked how he dealt with his feelings for Anastasia. Highly recommend if you are looking for a fun New Adult or Sports romance.

EXCERPT:

‘Who’s the employer sending you halfway around the world?’ he asked, resting his chin in his hand while they climbed steeply into the leaden skies.

She did not usually disclose her occupation – or her employer – to fellow passengers. It tended to result in exhaustive conversations about everything that had gone awry with their last fifty to three hundred flights. Then again, Julian Watkins did not convey the impression of having harassment on his mind, which was why she chose to stick to candour and gestured at her surroundings.

‘Voila.’

He lifted a brow. ‘United? What do you do for them?’

‘I’m in sales.’

‘I deduce from the slight hesitation that you aren’t entirely happy with your job.’

‘Who is?’ Silver countered. She was grateful to have the job in the first place, but that did not stop her from wondering whether she was cut out to endure another thirty-plus years of corporate treadmill – not that she had a choice, what with staggering debts to repay and a deplorable lack of billionaire husbands or relatives. ‘What do you do for a living?’

Julian Watkins dropped back into his seat and gave her a challenging glance. ‘Any guesses?’ Despite the humour in his voice, Silver could not help but feel that she was being tested. She had no idea what it took to pass the test; all she knew was that for some funky reason, she wanted to pass. Which was when she usually failed. Crossing her legs, she decided to simply say the first thing that sprang to mind.

‘Spy.’

She had expected him to smirk and ask whether she had watched The Night Manager one time too many – which she had – but he remained unperturbed. ‘Exhibits to support your allegation?’

‘The way you observe,’ she said after a moment of consideration. ‘Nothing seems to escape you. Let’s see … What colour shirt is the passenger in 1A wearing?’

‘A nauseating shade of orange,’ he offered without looking at the man in question.

‘What did the flight attendant do after she closed the door?’

‘She dropped her earring.’

With a triumphant beam, Silver gave a nod. ‘I stick to my guns. Spy.’

‘You seem to be rather perceptive yourself, Miss Laing.’ His expression became thoughtful. ‘And your guess isn’t completely off, although I’m not a spy in the classic sense of the word. Picture an organisation that appreciates a certain level of vigilance.’

‘Sounds cryptic. Industrial espionage?’

He chuckled. ‘Let’s call it complicated.’

Author Bio:

Sybil Le Pyrmont was born in Germany and was raised on the Canary Islands (that Gallic name is a pseudonym – her actual name has as much flair as a tax return). Although she now resides in Frankfurt, Germany, her heart has been beating for Tokyo ever since she spent a year in that city and discovered her epic love for all things Japan. That includes, to her acute embarrassment, the Shinagawa train station jingle she has installed as her ringtone. When Sybil isn’t writing, or dreaming of the anonymous donor who will some day gift her a house in Japan, she splits her time between her airline day job and long rants about the sunshine and the always-too-hot weather.

Sybil writes urban fantasy adventure to whisk her readers away to realms of imagination that have a distinct possibility of existing somewhere in the depths of the Universe.

EXCERPT:

After a longer than planned visit, Mitch’s widow and I hug goodbye. Watching Rochelle’s car fade in the distance, I realize I have to talk to Pastor Morgan before things go any further.

Why am I such a mess? This is what I want. It’s all I thought about on base, and while driving home. What will mom and dad think?

I sigh and pull in the church driveway. Pastor Morgon texted me before I left the house. He said to meet him behind the church at the picnic table. What will he think about my plan? I guess I’m about to find out.

Turning the truck off, I take a deep breath and rub my hands over my face. It’s going to be fine. I give myself a pep talk as I amble along the sidewalk to the table where he sits eyeing me.

“You look like a man with something big on his mind.” He grins. “Have a seat. I figured a hot cup of coffee might calm your nerves.” Pastor Morgan notes in his southern accent.

Plopping down, I cradle the mug between my hands staring at it. “Did I sound that bad?”

The man whose gotten to know me all too well the last year chuckles. “Lets just say I can sense when things are out of whack. And if there was any doubt before you got here, your body language was a dead giveaway.”

Shaking my head, one corner of my mouth curls up before I sip the warm liquid. “I did a lot of soul searching while I was away and I made a life-changing decision.”

“Ahh, okay, that explains a lot. So now you’re having second thoughts?”

“No…not really. While I was away I spent time with someone I hadn’t seen in over a year. It’s someone I’ve thought a lot about since taking leave from the Air Force. She uh—helped open my eyes to what kind of future I want.”

With his hands steepled, he glares over his glasses at me. “Go on.”

Downing half my coffee, I set the cup down. “Will I be hurting the people I care about with the decision I’ve made? Am I making any sense?”

“Not so much. You know there’s not much I haven’t heard before and anything you tell me stays between you, me and the man above. I think the best thing you can do is spell it out for me Liam, Just start at the beginning.”

Author Bio:

Freda was born in southern New Jersey but grew up in Florida. She has loved writing her entire life. After retiring from a career in law enforcement, she knew it was time to fulfill her lifelong dream of being a published author.

She’s the author of The Hawaii Series, proudly named from her love of the beautiful Hawaiian Islands. It’s a three-book series with all of them written as standalone books.

Freda loves her large family, horses, dogs, cat, and close friends. She hosts monthly family dinners at her home in the country, which she shares with her husband.

She loves baking (she owned and operated a cupcake business for years), cooking, yoga, crocheting, nature and traveling with the love of her life.

Reading Round Up: November 23rd – 30th

Happy Thursday Friends! I hope everyones week is going well. Things are going slowly here as we adjust back to remote learning and all of us being home during the day. Here is the last books I read in November and I had some real duds, I always feel bad when I rate things low but not all books are for everyone. If you have read any of these, let me know your thoughts in the comments below.

Meant To Be Immortal by Lynsay Sands – 4 Stars In book #32 of the Argeneau Vampire series we are following Mac Ageneau who after just moving in to his new house gets caught in a fire and almost dies. While dealing with the aftermath of the fire he meets CJ Cummings who is in town to investigate one of the town’s police officers and gets roped into helping out at the fire. Mac is a vampire and CJ is his potential life mate so now he has to try and convince her to be with him without scaring her off. I always love these stories because they are always a good time. You have a love story going on but you almost always have a ton of action that helps the story move forward. One of things I really love about this series is that you can really jump on at any point, the author always gives enough background so new readers can jump in and old readers get a little refresh. If you are looking for a fun paranormal romance series, I highly recommend these and I think that this one is great for new readers to jump in with. Thank you to Avon Books, Harper Voyager and Netgalley for my gifted copy in exchange for my honest review! (This book comes out April 27, 2021.)

Why I Held Your Hand by Augustus Reilly – 2 Stars This was a weird for me. Overall I liked the writing and tone of the story, it kept me engaged and moving forward. However, the story itself was just off. In the very first scene we have the main character, Laura who is asleep in her car with no bra on and some boy in the parking lot is wearing it. While it was funny it was not explained well enough to make sense. Right after this she meets two men, one she is immediately attracted too and one she did not like. However after starting a relationship with first guy she starts a working relationship with the other and over time develops feelings for both men. I did not like that the main character slept with both men pretty close together and that she couldn’t make up her mind. When she was one man she was all about him but then would switch and only want to be with the other when he was around. While there were many aspects of this that I didn’t care for I think I will try from this author again as her writing was engaging. Thank you to Rhapsodic Press and Netgalley for my complimentary copy in exchange for my honest review.

Make Them Cry by Smith Henderson and Jon Marc Smith – 1 Star I am not sure where to begin with this book but I will say I don’t think it was for me. I felt like this story was all over the place at times and it was hard to follow. We have three points a view, A DEA agent, an enforcer for a drug cartel and a CIA agent. Diane Harbaugh is the DEA agent and after a dicey situation she up and leaves for Mexico without telling anyone, to deal with a mysterious man asking for her help. While there she runs into CIA agent Ian Carver who helps her out. Also trying to find the DEA agent is Tomas, who is after the man she is there to talk with. What follows is a lot of action that I found hard to keep up with at times, I honestly can’t say what the main point of this story was. I also found the characters hard to relate to and understand their motivations throughout the book. Thank you Harper Collins and Netgalley for my complimentary copy in exchange for my honest review.

Second Chance on Cypress Lane by Reese Ryan – 4 Stars This was a fun second chance romance about Dakota who was a reporter in NY and after a work scandal moved back to her home town of Holly Grove Island. While home she helps take care of her father and reconnect with her best friend Sin and her first love Dexter. I loved the dual perspectives of both main characters and seeing why they made the choices they did. At times I struggled with Dakota because she was so intent on keeping one path she was ignoring everything around her. Dexter was a swoon worthy main man, he cared for Dakota even after all their time apart and just wanted what was best for her, however he thought he knew what that was without consulting her a few times. Over all a very fun read and I loved the summer setting, made me want to go on a warm vacation! If you love small town romances with a little bit of steam, then be sure to pick this one up. Thank you Forever Pub for my gifted copy in exchange for my review!

In A Holidaze by Christina Lauren – 2 Stars I really wanted to like this book as Christina Lauren has written some of my favorite books but sadly this one just didn’t work for. This is the story of Mae (who had so many nicknames that at times I couldn’t keep them all straight!) who after spending the week with her family and friends at their annual Holiday vacation gets into an accident and starts a Groundhog Day time loop. She restarts the week over until she gets things right. I found myself bored at times and not wanting to pick the book because I was tired of reading the same story over. There was also a romance in this book that I just never felt any connection with and it felt a little forced to me. I think that this book just came at a time when I needed something else and this one just didn’t deliver.

The Revenge Pact by Ilsa Madden-Mills – 4 Stars – Sports Romances is one of my favorite sub-genres!

I haven’t seen her in three years.

I haven’t talked to her since the kiss.

So why am I on a plane, flying across the world to spend a week with her in Germany?

One word: Pops.

My life’s a mess.
My possible football career is hanging on by a thread.
I’m driving the roads of Germany in honor of Pops with the one girl I can never have.
And I’m sharing a bed with her, the girl I’ve measured everyone else up to, while desperately trying to not to touch her.

And I’m about to break that pact. For good.

Right?
